So while building or repairing a guitar, some sawdust and wood chips inevitably gets into the box and I found it really difficult to get it back out. How can I clean the inside of the box?

Normally I've used a vacuum cleaner, shaking the guitar about, taking care not to block the soundhole and collapse the box.
But last time I used the vacuum cleaner, (nozzle just above the soundhole) with compressed air (from a sprayer turbine) which proved more efficient and kept the sawdust/chippings from flying about the shop.

The name catgut is confusing. There are two explanations for the mix up.

Catgut is an abbreviation of the word cattle gut. Gut strings are made from sheep or goat intestines, in the past even from horse, mule or donkey intestines.

Otherwise it could be from the word kitgut or kitstring. Kit meant fiddle, not kitten.

Vacuum cleaner on suck to remove the large bits, vacuum cleaner on blow (shifts way move air then your typical air line) to remove the smaller stuff.

I used popcorn once on a very funky old guitar. Shake it around, dump it out, then vacuum.

I have heard of using rice to clean inside, but I think Tai is only concerned about saw dust.

Yea, sawdust is really difficult to get out, it sticks to anything and nothing less than direct wiping will get rid of it. I have noticed on many occasion that sawdust would get into the box and once it's inside, no amount of shaking would remove it.

I carefully use the shop vac with a soft brush attachment that came with our central vac for the house. (but don't tell my wife - she's been looking for that attachment for years!). It works really well and gives that soft scrubbing action to pick up that hard to remove sawdust. Anything else that remains in the guitar I joke that it's no charge, the sawdust is free. :)

One caution with compressed air--Taylor tells me that the bodies can explode. Bet that's exciting! I use it but not too much and make sure to not block the soundhole with my hand. I have my students use a vacuum.

The more I read about the silly gun laws in the lower 48- the more I want to stay in Alaska. The 2nd amendment is alive and thriving here. You can buy a military grade blow torch, an AR-15, an AK-47, a Glock 40, and a .44 Magnum at your local yard sale- or in 30 minutes at Sportsman's Warehouse.

Indeed the 49th state is almost completely awesome. That whole sun never going down all summer/forest fire thing is my only real complaint. It's my bad though- I get all "cold dead hand" at the mention of "someone" taking my home depot spray-gun that can only hold an ounce of lacquer and be sprayed constantly for .05 milliseconds at a time...
