Someone who knows what they are talking about will be along soon, but. . . is this one of those martin bolts-ons that sometimes come loose requiring a simple tightneing (rather than re-set)? maybe it is not even Martin I'm thining of, jsut ignore me. . .

Mahogany pattern HPL = Formica.

So has anyone done any sound comparisons of Formica vs. Plywood?

I'd guess maybe $150 on CL ?

^^^^^I havent done REAL TESTING on formica vs plywood but i have definitely heard it... I had one of those dx-1's when they first came out sounded GREAT for about a year and a half, then the belly came in so bad you couldnt keep the bridge on without bolting it down..... that model only had a x brace and a thin laminate under the top. (probably why it sounded good) (bassy)

now days they are a more standard x brace pattern (most of em) and sound pretty close to a yamaha plywood guitar..... if not worse

I've heard cheap Chinese guitars that sounded way better than a Martin formica guitar. Played one and it sounded terrible. Even a baby Taylor sounded better.

Many Martin dealers will sell new guitars for 40% off list or "MAP" (Minimum Advertised Price). That means this could have been purchased new for around $300. Non-collectible used Martins in good to excellent condition typically garner around 50% of their street price. So, considering the condition, I think your bid of $150 is a bit on the high side. That's just my opinion.

I agree, played all the Formica models at Martin last year. To my ear the smaller bodies sounded better than the large but all sounded very tin and hollow. I have done a few set ups on some of the cheap $129.99 guitars from musicians friend etc and if you can get the action to a decent place and work the nut a bit they actually don't sound all that bad. Especially if you take into account the ones I have seen appear to have been assembled with a hot glue gun.

Filling me fulla hope here guys .. laughing6-hehe . If I win this I will have $158.00 in it including shipping before repair ... May be to much , if so lesson learned . I am gonna see what happens and then if Im not happy with the sound to resell it " ( was thinking $250.00 or so ) " Then one of my family will get a present .

Either way , I chalk it up to a learning experience . I do appreciate the input guys , it gives me some basics to examine when / if it gets here . Thanks ! [:Y:]

As others have noted, these are not particularly highly regarded guitars. Fine for camping, Third World travel, Bering Sea crabbing, tornado chasing, space walks, etc., but not well-suited for your Sunday best. The numbers I listed above are pretty reliable and widely known among the Martin community, so I think you did well to lose the auction.

Again, just my opinion,

In Taiwan those guitars are overpriced. It sells for about 1,200 dollars here. And they still sound like crap. A Yamaha guitar 1/4 the price sounded better than that.

True , but a young child getting a " Martin" guitar for a present would have been elated and possible motivated to learn to do something with it. Ahh well , water under the bridge now ... Again thanks for the Input guys , I might not always agree , but I DO appreciate Honesty ! [:Y:]

Pretty close to a barge guitar, yes indeed.

I once had a Martin dread with the plastic back and sides that sounded and played great. Go figure.

You'd think that if Martin were making guitars with counter top material back and sides, they'd at least make it look like Brazilian! laughing6-hehe

It's not the formica back and sides that hurt the sound and short term durability of the instruments, it's the other elements that go into making a "cheap" guitar. The Richlite bridge is the first thing I would look at as a tone killer. The thicknessing and bracing of the top would be the next place I would look. The Stratabond neck and Richlite finger board, although not aesthetically great, probably work O.K..
I have built a number of HPL back and sided instruments, and although I would not call them "world beaters" they have sounded fine.
We don't put expensive materials and the time and care into an instrument made for a lower price point. Why would we compare it to a fine hand made guitar?
