At least "lining" was not an instrument builder corruption, that corruption came from the clothing industry aways back. So luckily we do not have to call it a kerfed strip of wood. Sometime we just need nouns. I spent 30 years in the computer industry. We had to make up nouns like crazy. It pretty normal activity in any domain.

Making up words when you have to? I get that. New nouns? Worth considering the implications. Turning nouns to verbs? Access?

You strike me as someone with a sense of our language. Is the origin of "lining" in guitar building really related more directly to the term in clothing than the meaning in violin building? When did they diverge?

I hate to put in a serious post, but:
As an engineer, there are words that are used in everyday language that have very specific meaning in engineerng. For example, stress and strain. Stress is a force divided by an area, and strain is the deformation caused by stress. This "jargon" allows engineers to effectively discuss ideas without having to continuously explain what they mean.
In this context, kerfing as a noun would not be strictly correct because kerfing as a verb has a specific meaning. It would be considered slang, and would be acceptable except in scholarly publication.
Luthiers have their own jargon, unfortunately it's not as universal within the profession as it is in others. So we have discussions like this... laughing6-hehe

I always used "kerfing" when I started building. Then I learned what a "kerf" was and I started calling them linings or kerfed linings. Education: It's good!

Sadly my best necking was done in High School. Though the whole operation is much more satisfying now that my workshop is no longer inside a 1974 Cutlass Supreme.

They are Bolivian Rosewood. In actually they are not Dalbergia (rosewood) but since terminology is in the eye of the beholder, I've got some seriously nice rosewood fingerkerfs don't you think?

Wait until you see our Fharging F-holes.

Filippo

ahhhhhhhhhhhhhh kewl , Im not to familiar with fharging "f" holes . I have seen alot of fharging "a" holes in my life though! laughing6-hehe laughing6-hehe laughing6-hehe

Fillipio, I take issue with you calling them faux bound finger kerfs. I saw how you made them on your other thread. They are indeed bound but with their own offcuts. Clearly these are self bound finger kerfs. But, I suspect we all knew what you meant. . .

You mean semihemisherical fret ends or are they faux hemispherical? It's okay, we all know what you are talking about. . .

Them are either "frettings" or "slottings".

About this "noun" and "verb" stuff. I didn't pay attention in that class. I suppose I was to interested in "necking".
