A friend of mine has his heart set on a baritone 12-string. Not only have I never heard one, I've never heard of one.

Any thoughts? Ideas? Opinions? Well-justified accusations of insanity? :-)

Thanks

Steve

The late Lance McCollum made a few baritone 12 strings. Jaquie Gipson played a borrowed one on her Images cd and there are clips on her website. Pretty amazing tone.

This guy has worked out one with Santa Cruz; he is an artist endorser for them:

It was the one on which McCollum based his (scale length, anyway). And he has used it on various albums; there are clips on his site and at amazon.com.

I like the idea of a baritone 12 string. If I didn't build the things I'd definitely commission one one day.

Many of the old ladder braced guitars (Stella, Tonk, etc) were long scale and designed to be tuned to B or so which makes them quasi-baritone. They have a distintive sound associated with Leadbelly, Willie McTell, Paul Geremia, and a few others. Modern builders include Todd Cambio (Fraulini) and a couple of others - I have built one - there is some pretty good information in the MIMF archives. Here is the 26.5 inch 12 fret 000 Stella clone next to a 25.4 inch 14 fret OM

The Martin Pete Seeger model is another modern baritone 12. I haven't had a chance to play one but I would expect it to sound very different than a Stella-clone

Some people refer to the Stella clones as Baritones-as stated 26-1/2" scale tuned to C or B.
