While we're at it lets just wear a respirator everywhere we go... after all there are plenty of harmful yet invisible stuff out there, and who knows if a terrorist might decide to release poisonous gas...

Kinda like this...

I will never again spray nitro in my shop until I build a dedicated high quality spray room. And when I do I will start using a full face respirator. Heck I might even treat it like an IDLH situation. That stuff is nasty. I was sick for three days last time I sprayed. I thought my liver was about to give out on me.

If you think nitro is bad... I heard those 2k stuff that many guitar companies use (same as car stuff) is worse... They said one breath of the fume is enough to do serious damage to your health.

By the way has anyone thought to seal those respirator cartridge into one of those vacuum bags designed for compressing beddings? Does it prolong the life of a cartridge when stored this way?

No Just store it in a bag.
Make sure the respirator is dry before puttin it in a sealed plastic bag. More harm could be done by the bacteria that can grow in a moist environment. Exhaled air has 100 percent humidity and the cartridges get wet.

If your breathing out through your cartridge its time for a new respirator.

The mask gets wet when a person exhales into it. Don't put it in a sealed bag when wet.

yep...exhaled air is NOT supposed to be going through the cartridges and to test this you cover up the front of the mask and exhale...if the mask doesn't bulge out like a balloon then you have an issue...either a poor fit or the 'valve' that keeps air from going out through the cartridges has a problem...not that I truly understand the mechanism that does this but logically the mask needs to be designed so that only air coming in goes through the filters as any other method would cause the filters to wear out ~2x as fast and also be subject to the issues of moisture from one's breath

The mask has a check valve on it that prevents you from exhaling through the cartridge. If you are able to then the check valve is broken.
