I've been buffing with liquids as I don't have a buffing setup large enough to handle the 16 - 18" wheels. Maybe in the future.
I'm curious how long does it take to buff out from the 600 grit sanding on a wheel? If I sand to 2000 I will spend an hour buffing more or less.

Not sure ---- for final we go through a series of much finer grits before rub out

As you may find out it is often more technique . I have been using Nitro for a long time and won't use anything else. I pretty much use the same methodology as Martin . While I do use a finish shop ( retired Martin finish guy ) I have not issues but I can say , allow a good 2 to 3 week cure time.
It is more about prep and patience.
It took me a while to learn what worked for me. I used Nitro on furniture but guitars are not furniture. Learning how to buff and polish is also a knack one needs to work on.
I go to 800 grit to level and then start the finish with 1500 and 2000 . Then buffing and polish compounds. I like the repairability of Nitro but agree there are other finishes out there that are excellent. My customers expect Nitro but understand you sure don't what to spray without the proper equipment.
Find what works for you.

I've gone through a couple of gallons of nitrocellulose lacquer from Bill Hirsch Auto, $75 plus shipping online. I haven't had any problems with it but I can't say if it has less plasticizers than any other brand. I painted my hot rod with it as well as repairing and building guitars. The hot rod finish is cracking up massively after four years so maybe it is harder than normal. I'm curious if anyone has comparative experience with the Hirsch lacquer.
