It's an interesting concept, but I cannot envisage that you could get an accurate tracing of an instrument simply by freehanding a laser beam round the perimeter. If the beam were a constant tangent to the surface, then it might be feasible, even allowing for the fact that the "pen" wouldn't be at a constant distance from the surface, but in real life, the software wouldn't be able to tell at what angle the beam was hitting the surface.

More importantly, you would have to have some way of determining the coordinates of the beam emission at every point of measurement. I don't see how this would be possible with an apparently cordless tool ... not unless GPS has made a quantum leap forward in the last few weeks ...

My wife just got a new crown on her tooth. Instead of taking an impression, the dentist waived a laser around and sent the program from it to a laboratory to make the crown. Beats me how it works.
