The name catgut is confusing. There are two explanations for the mix up.

Catgut is an abbreviation of the word cattle gut. Gut strings are made from sheep or goat intestines, in the past even from horse, mule or donkey intestines.

Otherwise it could be from the word kitgut or kitstring. Kit meant fiddle, not kitten.

I was lucky as I bought it off the UK Workshop website for just £25 posted. It is totally unused so all I had to do was hone a slight secondary bevel. I already have old Stanley 110, 120 and 130 planes but this one works very well indeed and I find the size very comfortable for single handed use. Should be just perfect for shaving braces and back strips.
