I got some luthier stuff that I'm never going to use... and is taking up a lot of space.

I got several feet of LMI fret wire, large and some small.
I got a few sets of AA grade sitka spruce and German spruce tops
I will add to the list if I can think of it.

Please PM me for details.

I'm sure there are some young builders who would benefit from your kind offer, Tai! [:Y:]

I forgot to mention, I'm in Austin TX. I can ship but I prefer local pickup since they are a bit awkward to ship

This is what I have right now. there's one set of German spruce, and 3 sets of sitka spruce. They're not master grade or anything but good enough for most guitars, they are structurally sound and have minimal runout so it doesn't have to be for a beginner... expert luthiers can still use it and make good guitars.

Yes the radius blocks are included. I'm not going to be using them in the foreseeable future.

I'm not able to address everyone through PM but I prefer local pickup because these items are kinda awkward to ship. I will ship if you want, however I got a bunch of competing offers so I'm not sure what to do here. It makes no sense to ship them piecemeal because the shipping cost is just going to be too high.

Shipping cost is going to be anywhere from 40-60 dollars depending on how small I can make the package... this is assuming a package size of 20 x 5 x 12 and a weight of around 10-20lbs. (I am in Texas so I assume the destination to be California, so it is a representative of shipping to anywhere in the lower 48) It's really easy to overweight the package and unfortunately due to the awkward size of the object flat rate packages won't cut it. If you just want the radius block I can stuff it in a flat rate envelope and ship it for less than 10 dollars however. I can also cut the fret wire down so it will fit in a much smaller box to save on shipping.

I also have to find a box... there are no ready made boxes for something like this. I can see what I can find at work...

If you want to trade, I could use some gunstock blanks (walnut or something, mahogany makes poor gunstocks)

The sanding blocks would fit into a small flat rate box for $6.80 USPS. The tops would fit into a Large Flat Rate Board Game Box if they have them at your Post Office. They are $18.75 to anywhere in the USA no matter how heavy it is. You can also have a bundle of 25 of them shipped to you for free if you want. https://store.usps.com/store/browse/pro ... d=P_GB_FRB

I will look into that... if so I can ship with that. I never seen a flat rate game box though.

Most offices don't stock them, but customers that get a bundle that can't use them drop them off and sometimes they have them. I work at a Post Office and we have a few on hand most of the time. They don't stock them in the lobby, you might have to ask or order them. If you can't find any, I could bundle some up and mail them to you for free if you want. Or just order a free bundle and give the rest to your friendly window clerk. :)

ok, I just ordered a bundle of the game box. So anyone wants it shipping is whatever the large flat rate box cost. I'll look and see if I got anything else I can "liquidate". Since I'm going to get competing offers... I'm not sure how I will pick the "winner".

I will need about a week to get the box before I can ship.

The stuff is taken. I'm just waiting for the game box from USPS so I can ship the stuff.

If I find anything else I will make another post about this. It saddens me to have to give stuff away but it's not something that I can really sell on ebay for anything (not too many guitar builders out there), since I can't really practice guitar making in any capacity...

I kinda have to. I do not have a space where I can make wood dust without consequence. I do not have the extra money to rent a space where I can have tools nor do I know where to get access to space that allows me to do that. I am aware that Austin has a hackerspace, but their fees are kinda high (I guess it's cheap compared to paying 5000 a month for a commercial space) but more importantly, it's too far by bus and I do not have a car, so it makes things hard.

In the far future if I can afford to buy or rent a house, I can perhaps use the garage as a space for those kind of things, but right now I'm kinda limited to making metal shavings rather than wood dust since metal shavings are much easier to control. However the problem remains that I live on the 3rd floor so I have concerns about whether a particular tool or machine will weight so much that it will cause a structural collapse. I don't know how strong apartment buildings are supposed to be but I have fear of them collapsing due to weight all the time. They feel a bit flimsy to be honest with you.

Furthermore, Austin's music scene has been rather hard to work with for me. I can't seem to get to know any of them short of spending time at one of those bars all the time (which if you follow the rules of the bar regularly, that's no less than 50 dollars for all the drinks and tips) which buys you *possible* opportunity to know a musician, who may or may not be interested in giving you work. Musicians aren't known for being rich unless they are connected to mass media, so I decided it's fool's errand trying (it seems the only way to get any work for a guitar tech in Austin is to have big name endorsements).

So as a result I have taken up gunsmithing. It's not going to be a vocation by a long shot, and I'm not even going to try and get a type 9 FFL. It is interesting in that it's very similar to guitarmaking.

I'm sorry to go but it just does not seem like I have the support of the community to continue guitarmaking as a vocation, plus at the moment there just isn't any infrastructure support that I can draw on (for example terrible public transport, forcing me to have to get a car, which costs a minimum of 500 a month in insurance, payment, fuel, maintanence, etc.) so it's going to have to wait until I get a better job.

I hate that it's not working out for you as you had hoped. I was following your work back in Taiwan and it seemed like this would be a good opportunity.

I understand the problem with public transportation here. It's a real issue. Chicago, New York, and Boston are much friendlier to life without a car. Most other cities are not that good if you don't have a car.

I hope you all the best in your new endeavor.

Thanks

Chicago, NYC, etc. would have been better, however I would probably be an instant felon trying to do gunsmithing, even for myself. They have strict gun laws and high violent crimes. I was kinda sick of big cities honestly.

Plus rent in those places will be high enough that I would be in worse situations. Even if jobs there paid better the cost of living far outpaces increase in wage. I am in Austin because I go to UT. It couldn't really be anywhere else for the time being.

Well - you are doing the right thing for now. Focus on your studies and in the future - perhaps you will be able to come back to the guitar.

Stop by Franklins BBQ in Austin and tell me how the brisket is. I'm in Houston so if you need anything just holler.

Where is it? I haven't had much BBQ because it costs $$$ and that's not something I got a lot of at the moment (I need to save what I can). I like Rudy's but unfortunately not having a car means it will take HOURS to get there by bus, if it is even possible at all. Austin likes to punish people who refuses to buy a car and pay the high monthly maintanence costs.

Welcome (or welcome back) to modern life in the good ole USA. We have no public transport, but lots of easy credit so you can buy a $3,000 clunker for 40 easy payments of $250 a month. With any luck you'll default after about a year so they can repossess it and sell it again for another 40 payments of $250. Oh, and don't forget the mandatory $100 a month in insurance to a company that will spend a third of that money finding schemes to make it so they don't have to ever pay a claim.

Wait ... where did that come from? Oh yeah, coming up on a birthday soon. So you kids get off my lawn! [WINKING FACE]

that's it...twice you've complained about Austin..

ermmm...well at this particular moment in time I really don't care about any consequences...

d00d...man up for God's sake!

here you live in Austin, Texas, surely 'ruled' by those following the U.N.'s Agenda 21, sanctuary city (hopefully to soon lose federal funding, which will lead to higher property taxes, which will give me a darned good reason to: get a lawyer, file for divorce, force the sale of the house I've paid for all by myself for the last 17 years, and get the he!! out of this liberal town), and since the 'elite' are clearly following the agenda 21 principal of no cars, bicycles, mass transit, etc., and are creating a path of to a no vehicle city..yet you whine...again, man up and deal with it! seriously...I don't know exactly where you hail from (Taiwan?), but is the mass transit there any better? and if the answer is yes, then what are the differences in the situation? Texas is traditionally a state of lots of real estate, which requires an automobile to get around. I moved here 27 years ago...I clearly remember 360 having a stop light at Lost Creek, then one at Westlake Drive, then the next at Spicewood Springs...now look at the snarled up mess...

while I might have issues with the mess this town has become, on the flip side I am thankful for it. why?, because I'm a tradesman and the boom has certainly kept me very busy...

$50 for a night out at a bar? are you serious? 'rules'?...there are no rules...have a couple of beers ($5 a pop), tip the bartender $1...and just skip that junk, your odds of meeting a serious customer at any venue are about squat...the best you could even contemplate is to frequent open mics, figure if a personality had a slim chance of whatever (been there, done that, played on live TV, worn that shirt), then offer that person your services in exchange for advertisement. as notes, I've worn that shirt...what shirt? the one of the struggling artist, playing open mics, getting showcases, whatever...you know what I learned? it's not what you know, but who you know (hey Lance, be thankful I skipped my rather vulgar diatribe on it all...(and yeah, as best I can tell, highly accurate).

in parting, you make mention about worries of structural failure...all modern apartment complexes have concrete floors...yeah, that's right, structural concrete floors...simple test...hit the floor with a hammer and if you have any musical abilities you will immediately know if it's joists (or trusses) with plywood subflooring, or concrete.

again, you seriously need to man up, grow up, go back to where you came from, whatever...

and just whom am I? 53 years old, moved here and there as a baby, lived in the Bay Area for 21 years of my life, and lived in Austin for the aforementioned 27 years.

Well, I log off for a couple weeks and miss the whole show. That was a very generous offer, and I'm sure a lot of folks will appreciate your kind contributions. Thank you.

I live in South Austin and am currently working on guitar number 2. I've got a day job, so I'm squarely in the hobbyist camp. Lots of luthier tools and supplies are small, so hold on to them if you can. They don't take up too much space and you might change your mind in a couple months/years.

If you have more that you need to find a home for, let me know. I can't guarantee that it'll be made into a perfect instrument, but it'll be well cared for.

In the mean time, enjoy Austin. It's a great city. If you don't mind drinking Lonestar you can hear a lot of music for almost free.

Good luck out there.

I ordered the boxes from USPS, but how long do they take to actually ship it out? I can't send it unless I get the box. It has been stuck on "processing" for a week...

Also as for that last guy getting at me for complaining... let me tell you people complain all the time so it's hypocritical to get angry at me for that. Blues is nothing but 3-5 minutes of complaining about stuff that could have been, but not. I don't get why this society frowns so much on complaining, after all it is complaints that gets stuff done and accelerates progress (would anti discrimination laws ever be passed or enforced without someone complaining?)

Tai, you're right.....everyone complains.... and everyone thinks their complaining is more valid that the other guy's. It's just life.
Thanks for your generosity.
