I've been using Behlen Waterborne Urethane Finish for some years now. I decided long ago that spraying nitro wasn't suitable for the sort of "domestic" instrument building that I do and while I most likely can't get that super clear high gloss finish I find the results sufficient for my needs. No one has complained! I've also found it suitable to wipe, brush or spray and generally easy and forgiving in use. I just went to the Behlen UK web site http://www.behlen.co.uk/ where it says they're no longer importing into the UK. They refer me to General Finishes, http://www.generalfinishes.co.uk/ who have a range of products but nothing that looks like a direct replacement. Do other UK based makers have any recommendations? I've emailed General Finishes but so far they haven't replied.

Here's the reply I got from General Finishes:
"Thanks for your enquiry, we still have a quantity of the Behlen WB Urethane in stock and we have just put it on our ebay shop.
Due to being a new ebay shop, in the beginning you are restricted in the quantity of products you can sell, so if you require more than 1, let me know ?
There are 2 alternative items in the General finishes range that you might want to consider in future, High Performance Top Coat and VAR Top Coat."
I've ordered some more of the Behlen and when I have time I may try the General Finishes VAR top coat

You may find the Enduro Var worth a try. I have no experience of the HP Top Coat.
If you search the forum for enduro var you will find several posts.

The name catgut is confusing. There are two explanations for the mix up.

Catgut is an abbreviation of the word cattle gut. Gut strings are made from sheep or goat intestines, in the past even from horse, mule or donkey intestines.

Otherwise it could be from the word kitgut or kitstring. Kit meant fiddle, not kitten.

Thanks Colin. Looking on the web site I think Enduro Var and VAR Top Coat are the same thing so with your endorsement that looks the way to go.
