A few weeks back someone, sorry, I don't remember who, posted on Mike Doolin's springless magnetic thickness gauge in American Lutherie No. 109.
This peaked my interest as I'd recently been wanting to make a magnetic thickness gauge and I had forgotten that Mike Doolin had published a detailed article on making it. So I went to my trusty library of AL back issues and dug out No. 109 and built the gauge this weekend. This gauge works beautifully. The repeatability window is is around +/-.002 inches and the measurements agree (within the repeatability window) with my micrometer as I tested it on various scraps of wood.
Cost me around $25 in brass tubes and magnets as I had the indicator already. Much easier on the pocket book though than the $400 for the other options.
This design is a collaboration between Alain Bieber and Mike Doolin. I would recommend making one of these if your wanting a magnetic thickness gauge.
