As Chris indicated the 8 1/2" Hitachi slider is very nice tool we got one when the motor on our 10" radial arm saw died.

I have not verified this. But we may be on the front end of this one. I'm going in the morning to check. But if true, some of you might want a shot at it. I'm pretty sure I would.

This saw is normally $599, currently showing $399 on line. Word is it's going for $245 in store.

Dewalt slider dual bevel, 12".

Hitachi is definitely an underrated brand. My 10" chop saw is accurate and very reliable. So is my circular saw and nail guns.

Disclaimer:
The following info is based mostly on research and not any direct experience, previous posts were.
Apparently the new Hitachi 8 1/4" saw is not up to snuff, the unit I owned was purchased in'96 I think Its been a long time, that saw is great however the newer version from online reviews is not the quality of the old ones. I have a friend who has a makita 71/2" (71/4 blades work fine) at 28 lbs the lightest slide saw on the market and according to reports, I have not used this saw, is very good. Unfortunately it seems to be discontinued but available on Ebay. I do like Makita's saws and if a light saw with a 12" crosscut capacity fit my work situation I would give it a try.

I ended up with a Festool Kapex sliding miter saw. Love it.
I had a Hitachi 10" for many years prior and was very happy with it.
I had to move up to the Festool only because of space constraints, but after using it for over a year now, I wouldn't go back to the Hitachi.
