I've got a bit of a tricky inlay on a FB that is going to take me close to some of the fret slots. I think I've heard of folks using a teflon or plastic of some sort to insert into the slot before gluing the inlay in order to keep from filling the fret slot. Any one have any advice on something to use that I might find locally or around the house? Yogurt lid or something like that maybe? It would be nice to find something that I don't have to order and wait for, being my usual impatient self.

Thanks!

I use teflon I cut out of a sheet I ordered from McMaster Carr long ago. Works great.

Catgut is an abbreviation of the word cattle gut. Gut strings are made from sheep or goat intestines, in the past even from horse, mule or donkey intestines.

Otherwise it could be from the word kitgut or kitstring. Kit meant fiddle, not kitten.

If this post was the fortune cookie that came with your Cantonese takeout, it would read:

"What you seek is right in front of you"

0.023 polypropylene takeaway soup container lids, which bonds very poorly - if at all - with cyanoacrylate or indeed most other glues...an order of kung pao chicken and egg drop soup away.

Bingo!
But I would do a trial run first off the board to check its ungluableness (is that a word?)

There are some two-part CA glues (primer plus CA) that will glue low surface energy materials, so certainly trial this on scrap. The boss prefers this over Teflon where tang clearance is an issue...and worth a check on thickness - the lids I've repurposed can vary from 0.021 to 0.025..we use the thicker material for mini-spreaders. In general, if the dam material fits in the slot, it works as well as the Teflon material that we have from Stewart MacDonald.

CA or any other glue for that matter does not stick to clear plastic packaging tape -- we currently use Duck Brand heavy duty. We use it for a release layer on many of our glue up tools and fixtures.

Thanks Ken. I knew that and use it on some of my jigs. You could easily build up to the fret slot width with a plastic lid and packing tape if need be.

Thanks gentlemen. Glad I asked.
