I got some of that flexible Abalone from LMI today. Man is it thin! I usually level my rosettes on the thickness sander and it looks like the Abalone is only a couple of thousands thick over the rubber backer and would be very easy to sand through if not perfectly level at installation.

Have any of you guys had that problem?

I really like zipflex and have had good success with it. I do inlay it as flush as possible to avoid excess sanding, but I have never had any issues with the sanding I have done. The shell component is .050" so you should be fine as long as you are careful.

Whoops I just looked closer. At first I thought it was just a thin veneer on a thick rubber backer. OK now I see. Yeah that'll work great!
Thanks!

I also love it and use it just as Greg said. Keep it all close as possible.

I don't think the shell is 50 thou .. more like 30, plus the backer plastic, unless its been changed recently ... I like to inlay it below flush, then sand down to it ... better safe than sorry.

I always thought the stuff was too homogenized for my taste. No broken abalone lines. Besides, a green strip of wood looks better than black next to abalone.

But, I suppose for "modern guitars"...

Well now that I've found that it is actually plenty thick I'll be using it on a rosette tomorrow and will report back.
