Yep, I did this. And took awhile for me to realize what I had done. Ahh, senility, I suppose.

Can't say I've made that particular mistake! Before I cut the individual blocks for the heel I mark each one with a letter (marked on the side of the blocks), so that they follow through consecutively - the Neck itself is 'a', the next block 'b', the one after 'c' and 'd'. Makes that kind of mistake that much harder to do and prevents getting the blocks out of sequence.

It takes a brave man for admitting to that mistake. [:Y:]
Or at least one with a sense of humor :D
At least it looks salvageable, with enough thickness in the neck and length in the headstock.

The name catgut is confusing. There are two explanations for the mix up.

Catgut is an abbreviation of the word cattle gut. Gut strings are made from sheep or goat intestines, in the past even from horse, mule or donkey intestines.

Otherwise it could be from the word kitgut or kitstring. Kit meant fiddle, not kitten.

Wilb, I've got to say I admire you for posting that one. You gave me a real chuckle, but crazy things have happened to everyone. I don't think it'll be a difficult fix, either. Thanks for showing it to us.

Gotta admit, it's one of the dumbest things I've done. My wife would probably say, " Yeah, one of many."

I'm new to the forum and getting started with my first real complete build soon, so I can see this happening. I guess the easiest thing is to move the heel blocks rather than mess with what looks like a good scarf joint on the headstock, right? Gotta' admit it took me a sec looking at it to see what was wrong, though. [:Y:]

Edit thought - Or would that put the scarf joint going the wrong way...?

Ha! That's a tough one to imagine.

I've glued a classical bridge on backwards (tie block towards neck, saddle slot towards tail) and was thankful for fish glue's long open time - I caught the problem when I took the clamps off to clean up squeeze out.

I have a cursed relationship with fretboard side markers. I'm sanding and filling a guitar right now, and just noticed during the last session that my nicely done dots are at the 4th, 6th, 8th, 10th and 13th frets. Oops! I'm so glad I only use ebony boards! (I put them on the treble side one time, too.)

Well we all mess up. I see it to be salvageable. Good luck down the road with it. Remember the tuners go on the skinny end. Lol

Thanks for a really good laugh! And thank you for admitting and even showcasing your errors.

I have been building for a long time now but there are always mistakes and issues that crop up, half the battle is overcoming the issues, and redoing the work properly.

Thanks again for some good humour and humility.

Joel

Cut the neck tenon and made the perfect mortis template, snug as a bug.
Forgot to tighten all the clamps and my template moved.
Shimmed with veneer.

I think I would have went off in a dark corner of the shop and fixed that one!

Doesn't look too bad, move on and work around it.

Yup big oops, I did not notice this until I was checking the compensation on the bridge. Look at the 7th or 8th fret down. I had to pull the fret board and install a new one.

It's not a mistake unless you can't fix it. Did you patent it?

I believe that nobody is smart enough to have made an original mistake.
I too have made that exact mistake gluing the neck blocks upside down. It is indeed salvageable. Cut on the glue line and put them on the correct position.

WilbPorter,
Thanks for sharing. At least it shoul be easy to fix. Getting parts upside down or turned around is easy to do when building guitars. I work carefully, but it still happens - especially if I work quickly.

I fixed this clamp while my brain did something else, but it looks like it could have been the perfect clamp for the OP..
