And backin the dark ages of the OLF, there were these weeklong online swap meets, do these still occur? Just needing to get rid of my stuff and wondering about the best method. It would seem to me that the classifieds might be more active if sellers only had to pay but buyers had free access. Just an idea....
Thanks in advance for your input.

Anyone whose avatar says Contributing Member subscribes to the classifieds. Personally, that's the first thing I check when I log on. Maybe I have a wood hoarding problem? It's Saturday, I'm not going to fret over that now.

I resemble Kevin's remark. :-)

There is enough traffic in the Classifieds that desirable items priced right tend to sell quickly. We haven't had a Swap-a-palooza in a quite a while. It would be fun to get another one going.

Good to have you post, John. It's always nice to learn a bit about how you approach things and to get a glimpse at some of your beautiful work.

I'm a fellow hoarder. (must resist BRW bridge blanks currently listed). I can't pass up a good deal for something I need............. OK don't really need anymore but I want it. I'd love to see some of your stuff I don't need John.

Good wood or tools at good prices move quickly in the classifieds. There are enough participants to keep it active.

I also check the classifieds every day. $0.99 a month is cheap.

Classifieds is also the 1st thing I check 90-% of the time. Sometimes selling, sometimes buying. I also look at it like it helps support the forum even if it is a trivial amount of $ for what I get out of it. There was a swap meet planned last year and more than a couple of people had things gathered to put on. If I remember right it was cancelled due to personal events in the life of the organizer, which is a good reason. With some prodding it may be able to be revived. That would be fun.
I agree with what Waddy sez.
Are you getting rid of everything? Hard to tell from your post. I hope not.

Howdy John - hope things in Cool are still very cool!

I use the classifieds as well but mostly as a seller at times. My experience has been very good but you know this crowd, lots of decent folks who keep their word and things go quickly and effortlessly.

Last winter I sold about $3K worth of stuff that I no longer saw myself using from my buy what ever looked cool to me days....

FYI too your suggestion has been made countless times prior and Lance has to date not wanted to go that way. I have a feeling too that there are some benefits as well for requiring a pittance of skin in the game for classified access. Anyway the classifieds work very well for me, I do look at them too, and are an excellent way to lighten your load.

The classified section is a must before morning coffee. I've gotten some great wood from here.

I check the classifieds regularly and have only been a buyer so far. I don't mind paying to have access.

I've bought from the classifieds, and check several times a day. There are some pretty good discussions now and then, and I have learned from them, as well.

John I can't give you any advice on the classifieds as being over in the UK shipping from the US has become prohibitive. But it is great to see you here again. Back in the early days of the OLF, along with Steve Kinnaird and Joshua French, you were one of my three guitar building heroes. Your little ladder braced blues machines were some of the finest guitars I have both seen and heard, I still have the road trip recordings on my MP3 player.

You're a great inspiration to me and many others, a truly, truly great guitar builder.

As I always used to say about you, 'John, you are a very wise man'.

Colin

I've used then and I'm in UK as well.
Stuff has been too good to miss, and some people kindly willing to post international.

The name catgut is confusing. There are two explanations for the mix up.

Catgut is an abbreviation of the word cattle gut. Gut strings are made from sheep or goat intestines, in the past even from horse, mule or donkey intestines.

Otherwise it could be from the word kitgut or kitstring. Kit meant fiddle, not kitten.

Hi Colin, great to see you here as well. And speaking of inspiring, your work certainly is, and a lot more intricate than anything I have done. I kinda got sidetracked the last couple of years building boats. I'm done with that now so it's time to go sailing!

I usually check the classifieds once a week but after reading this thread I see I need to check it daily so I can start sniping the good stuff before y'all get to it :D

I've gotten some really nice tools and materials through the classified, well worth it.

Try to get into the classified section then you will be given the offer to subscribe for $0.99 per month.

I would enjoy an opportunity to use the classified section, but I'd need to throw twelve bucks in first before I got a peek. Don't see too many merchants that charge admission to the store.

I felt the same way when I first joined the forum. In fact actually I never really thought it would be even beneficial and that I'd just stick to my regular suppliers. But I joined if for anything to help support the forum too. When I first joined I didn't come here too often but after a year or so I started coming here a lot more. Joining the classified has been extremely beneficial. I just bought ten Addy tops today as a matter of fact for a price you cannot find anywhere better online, not even close. I've purchased jigs that established luthiers have made them selves and don't sell any where else, tools, books and educational materials for half the price and so on. If you make guitars regularly then you will definitely benefit from joining the classified. I'm not trying to be a salesman or anything. But I think I may have even made a comment exactly like yours on this forum years ago only to turn around and realize that I was mistaken. [:Y:]

Still gotta make peace with the 'subscription' idea: "What's for sale? Pay twelve bucks and find out".

If you're looking at the classified section of your local newspaper, you've likely spent a buck for a single issue. The OLF classifieds are frequented by buyers and sellers who are pretty much an honest bunch, and if they aren't, they are found out.
I've subscribe to the OLF for three years. It has cost me about $40 with the Canadian exchange. I saved that much on about 1/2 of a singe purchase this year.
If you don't want to pony up the $11.88, thats one less person that I have to be quicker than to beat out of a bargain. :D
