This is my last project before leaving Taiwan... not sure when I'll build guitars again...

Nice job Tai, Very clean traditional look and very nice inlay work [:Y:]

I am sure your client will be happy with it.

So it is back to the Lone Star State for you? Hope you got all of your stuff shipped and it arrived safely. I suppose we will hear from you when you get settled and have your shop set up?

Here's wishing you a safe and speedy trip.

I'm only going to ship a small fraction of stuff... mainly tonewood and important jigs and special tools (such as reamers, nut files, etc.). Everything else like radius dish, forms, etc. are discarded because I can make more, and shipping within CONUS will not be too bad... but if I'm going back to UT, I doubt I will be building much guitars at all, unless I get a job as a guitar tech in Austin...

Nice job, Tai! Looks like a beauty. Make sure you get some glamour shots before it goes to the owner!

You got any tips for this? I don't really have a guitar stand at the moment, and I'm not much of a photographer... may have to ask the new owner for help on this...

Nice job Tai, I'm sure the new owner will be very pleased.

The name catgut is confusing. There are two explanations for the mix up.

Catgut is an abbreviation of the word cattle gut. Gut strings are made from sheep or goat intestines, in the past even from horse, mule or donkey intestines.

Otherwise it could be from the word kitgut or kitstring. Kit meant fiddle, not kitten.

Looks great! Congratulations, and welcome back to the US of A!

There's a nice guide to photographing guitars, for the non-specialist, here:

By the way I got a bandsaw that has a 1.5HP motor but I want to you know make it more powerful. So what if I go and find a 300HP diesel engine and use that to power the bandsaw? I bet you could like split whole trees with it...

Nice!!

A good part of photography is seeing rather than camera quality and lighting. If we can't really SEE the subject, we could still get lousy photos with great equipment.

Here's a few pointers that might help. They won't get you professional results, but might get you started.

You can get surprisingly good photos with a decent point and shoot, smartphone not so much, though a few of the latest ones are pretty good.

You're off to a good start with your photos. I think you're seeing pretty well. It appears you're thinking about how to get a lot of information about the guitar onto the image and that's good.

You could do fine just leaning your guitar against a decent piece of furniture. Keep the background simple.

If you can't get sharp images, try holding the camera against something solid. If lighting is low, anything that reduces camera shake will get you more sharpness.

Might use two lamps with the same type of bulbs. More the better. Use one or two for the main light and the other to fill in shadows. Pay attention to reflections in the finish. One thing is to use only one type of light source; for example don't put it by a window and turn on fluorescent tube lights. You'd get green shadows and blue highlights. If you can adjust white balance on your camera, it will help the color rendition a lot. Usually it involves pointing the camera at something white, like a sheet of paper to tell it, "this is white". The camera doesn't know.

If you have the space, don't stand too close. The guitar's shape will be distorted. I try to get back 8 or 10 ft and zoom in. Standing and pointing the camera down will also distort. If it's on the floor leaning against something, get down on your knees or lower so that you don't have to point down.

Play around with it. I'm sure you'll come up with presentable images. Hope that helps.

Pat
