Well, my wife went and decided to have another baby girl (making 3 now...) so thing have been getting busier. I am still trying to build, and just finished up this GA cutaway. Lutz from Shane, Cocobolo B&S from local sawmill.

Very nice Stephen. Like the rich colors of the cocobolo, and the inlay really stands out nicely. Terrific binding job as well. This is a timely post considering the cutaway discussion that is going on now. So I'll go ahead and ask - what kind of joint did you use? Glad you're back!

The name catgut is confusing. There are two explanations for the mix up.

Catgut is an abbreviation of the word cattle gut. Gut strings are made from sheep or goat intestines, in the past even from horse, mule or donkey intestines.

Otherwise it could be from the word kitgut or kitstring. Kit meant fiddle, not kitten.

I used a ' new'conventional bolt neck with mortise and tenon. Basically, I downsized my neck block proportionately to 'cutaway' side, and then glued the cutaway side directly to the side of the neck block. I went back and added thickened epoxy where the side flared away from the neck block to ensure this was a substantial joint. Then using a convention mortise and tenon for the neck, I temporarily joined the body and neck, and shaped the neck into the cutaway. Then removed the neck and finished the piece - Assembly was little difficult, as the finish thickness and such caused a slight alignment error from the side of the body to the heel of the neck...some post finish flossing generally took care of that.

Thats a really beautiful guitar. Plenty of nice details but where to start, love the bound sound hole and sideport/s and tree inlay and,,the list goes on.
