I believe there are a couple of species known as purpleheart. Most of it turns brown when cut, and then quickly turns bright purple. Sometimes it retains this color, and sometimes it goes back to brown over a period of several years.
I've never had any go back to brown, but I'm pretty sure I've only used one species. I got a couple of large boards several years ago and still have quite a bit left.
