Does it work for classical nuts or just steel string?

That's a good question. I would think only for SS. The ruler is slotted to bring each pair a little closer as you move across the board to account for string thickness. Since classical strings are all the same thickness I would imagine it would be better to make them equidistant...

Classical strings tend to have similar treble and bass thicknesses, i.e 2 sets 3 of similar sizes e.g. EJ45 Pro-Arte Nylon -
Trebles .0280, .0322, .0403 Basses .029, .35, .043
SM spacing rule, don't know but.......
Most builders seem to use equal spacing according to the Delamp CG site.

The name catgut is confusing. There are two explanations for the mix up.

Catgut is an abbreviation of the word cattle gut. Gut strings are made from sheep or goat intestines, in the past even from horse, mule or donkey intestines.

Otherwise it could be from the word kitgut or kitstring. Kit meant fiddle, not kitten.

I use it on my classicals, the increased spacing is pretty subtle; probably less than the error in measurement I would make without it. It allows you to space the strings for exactly the E - E distance you want, and because you mark through the slots, it is very consistent and accurate,

It's way easy and cheap to make your own - and you can have the benefit of any number of variants, to suit all kinds of needs and instruments:

I just pencil mark the two outer strings and eyeball the rest. Sometimes they come out like eek , sometimes like :? and occasionally like [:Y:] . Mostly they are :|

Hi Frank,
Thank you for sharing that method for making a string spacing rule. I will have to try my hand at making one. I usually determine the outside string locations and then do a calculation in millimeters of the spaces in between, adding or subtracting 1/2mms to come up with the spacing. My natural parsimonious-ness keeps me from buying the Stew mac rule, and your method looks like it will work fine.
Thanks again!
