I haven't posted in quite a while-been real busy,so here is one I finished a while ago.

This is the closest to Leadbelly's Guitar that I have made in this series .

Honduran Mahogany back. sides and neck, red spruce top, ebony bridge, fretboard and head veneer nitro finish.
purfling from LMI,Ivoroid binding from Axiom. Stew Mac Golden age tuners. Bolt-on neck joint (butt joint) adj. truss rod

26.5 scale -heavy strings tuned down 4 half steps 16" wide at lower bout 4-1/4"-4-3/4" deep

Traditionally ladder braced

Sweet looking 12 string Brad. [:Y:]

I love the perfling and backstip with the light Mahogany. Classy... [clap]

Thats my kind of guitar - very nice! Brad, quick question - How did you bend the LMI purling? Did you have any difficulties given how wide it is?

Thanks,

Glenn

That is one nice looking guitar Brad, classic.

The name catgut is confusing. There are two explanations for the mix up.

Catgut is an abbreviation of the word cattle gut. Gut strings are made from sheep or goat intestines, in the past even from horse, mule or donkey intestines.

Otherwise it could be from the word kitgut or kitstring. Kit meant fiddle, not kitten.

Really nice. I want to build something similar so can you tell me where you got the metal tailpiece as I am having trouble sourcing one.
Cheers, Bob

Hi Glenn,
The LMI purfling comes in two pieces, so it was easy to bend.

Hi Bob,

I get the tailpiece from Elderly Instruments. It is made by National. They cost $80. Kind of expensive if you ask me.

Some guys use a 6 string one and double up on the strings in the holes, they are only about 12 bucks.

Way to go Brad, glad to see you back and building the big Stella!
Did you use a spruce bridge patch or some other wood?
I got some of that split purfling from LMI, but it is darker in the center than the backstrips I have...

Fabulous!

If I ever make a 12 string, this is the kind I'll make.

If I ever finish the bass viol, that is...

Hi Glenn,

This is a different guitar, but the same bracing except there is no maple wear plate on top of the spruce bridge patch for the tailpiece guitar.

Hi Haans,

So far I have only used spruce for the bridge patch and add a thin overlay of maple for the wear plate for the ball ends on the pin bridge models.
