Wow - that was a quick 50 posts - I'd say Michi's gunpowder scorched guitar has been an unmitigated success!

Why use gunpowder, when you can use C4? It will make for some LOUD guitar.

Love Bryan, love Michi's work. Nice guy as well. The First video was awesome, second was silly. Seems Tai meant no harm what so ever. Thanks for sharing!

Haans, I was with RusRob with respect to the amount of hours that must have gone into your fire. I still have a maple mandolin top that I started carving a few years before my retirement and abandoned when I had trouble bending the sides. I have hopes of revisiting that top now that I've learned to thin and bend. I have kept a few of my poorly carved neck rejects and the funeral pyre has crossed my mind. I keep them around as reminders, but they do irritate me at times.

As far as purposely toasting any of my stash as part of my building process, I don't have the skill set or the desire to go there yet. But iron filings burn pretty easily don't they?

Sometimes it's best to take out the garbage both in the shop and the mind. The positive part (aside from a little heat) is learning. I'm sure most of us have a few instruments that need to be tossed. I just finished a shop "deep cleaning" that found three junkers, not to mention a few tools and misc. parts that I don't need, can't use. S'pose I could lament for a while, but tossing it is the quickest way to clean house.
As far as this Michi guy's work with his art form, I guess he can do anything he wants with his instruments. Although I went through a 3 year phase learning how to accurately distress mandolins many years ago, not something I would do to a guitar these days. Not much for "steampunk guitars" or Mickey Mouse ears and a crank myself either, but you have to remember that this stuff has all been tried by someone at some time or another. What sells is what becomes "popular", but I have always run from "popular".
As far as "extending the art form" of instruments, I just prefer to do it internally for tone. I like my instruments to look traditional, but that's just me.
I hear phosphorus burns nicely too...

We'll problem is if you get red phosphorous you will get a visit from the DEA because it is on their watch list. You do not want to have white phosphorous around. In addition to being very toxic it also burns when it comes into contact with air.

It seems red P is used to make meth...

When you look at the prices paid for objects, "Art" seems to pay much better than "Craft". I guess burning a top with gunpowder is a bit more "artsy" and attracts more attention than some of Michi's more finely crafted pieces. Funny how that is.....

Well problem with "art" is that there's a handful of artists who can do anything and people will pay billions for, then there's the rest of the artists in the world where nothing they do is worth more than a few cents.

I've still yet to burn any of my old junker guitars. The first ten I built were just training guitars but still they sound and play nice. I gave most of those away to family and still have my #1. It's ugly but it sounds nice.

I have sent a few .303 British rounds through one of them and stuck it up on the wall.

Wierd -- instead of giving unwanted guitars or guitar parts to the less fortunate -- it logical to blow them up or burn them? Not even close to being funny.

It's more about not having substandard work being out there that can ruin your reputation. That is also why all major brands destroys anything that fails quality check.

No -- its more about not thinking --- even Gibson, and Fender and others sell clearly marked reject parts and completed instruments. Also Martin's "Guitar Maker's Connection" sells tons of reject parts. suggest that you do some fact checks before posting.

Some folks post just so they can brag about how many posts they've recorded, some to rant, and some to stir the pot. We probably should all ask, befor we hit the submit button, is this post necessary and is it constructive.
Remember folks.....play nice

Sound advice for an explosive topic..... laughing6-hehe laughing6-hehe laughing6-hehe

I took the good advice from a friend a long time ago about posting on forums. He told me if you are in a hot debate with someone on a forum you should write your response in a text editor and then walk away for a bit. Come back in a while and read what you wrote down. If it is what you really intend to say then copy it into a reply on the forum and post it.

I have always used his advice and I have never posted something that I have regretted after the fact. What usually happens is I come back and read what I said and then just delete it or I re-write it so it says what I really mean not what I feel.

Has that stopped me from making stupid posts? No... But it does make me think about how I say things to people when I am upset.

Bob

I read a book with some good advice. Be slow to speak and quick to listen.
