...Not really bloody, but quite close.

After having some issues with my Resaw King, I went back to the Woodmaster CT. Took a fresh, brand new blade out of the box on friday afternoon. Put it on my saw, adjusted everything and started resawing the sides for my current BRW resawing project. Everything worked perfect, I resawed about 50 side sets, working friday evening, the complete saturday and this sunday morning.

What better than resawing some BRW on a sunny sunday morning....I had one billet still left over for resawing, so I started this morning. The blade was still working perfect, the cut flawless, no drifting, no strange noises, the surface quality very nice, no wobbling. Al systems go.

I had just done the last cut for the last side of BRW, really the very last side had just came off the saw, I took it and turned around for putting it away on the stash, also having a small fast look at it. I did not turn off the saw immediately, but luckily I was away from the saw, only 3 or 4 feet, but at least not next to it.

Suddenly out of nothing there was a big bang wow7-eyes and actually I realized quite fast what probably had happened and - just run outside of the room around the corner.

For a sunday morning this was quite exciting...

What do you think? Me and my brother have the same opinion, since the blade broke where it broke, we somehow assume there was a mistake in the blade or the weld, or during the welding.

This is also the very first Woodmaster CT which ever broke, and I am using the same tension on all of them. Tomorrow I will contact the company where I bought these baldes, I hope they will cooperate and send me a new blade.

Cheers, Alex

I had a similar experience last week... a Woodmaster CT that was nearing the end of its life. I started to hear and feel just the hint of a little 'thok thok thok' while cutting a side set and knew it would break soon so I thought I would get through that one cut and switch blades. About 5 seconds later it sounded like a shotgun went off when it broke. It looked just like yours but the break was nowhere near the weld. It gave me quite a jolt.

Hello James, mine was not close to his end of life ;) it just died suddenly...

Seriously, I had only resawn 50 sides of BRW, this is for the CT like nothing. Also that it tear apart so close to the weld makes me wondering and thinking,..... and to be honest, just hoping I get a new one for free.

Cheers, Alex

Lucky is all you can say. I am sure having one pop right in front of you would be scary.

You said:

I am curious what issues you had with the RK? I just picked up my new Laguna and I ordered a 1" RK with it. I just un-crated the saw and it isn't even put together yet. Just getting the 220 line installed tomorrow and I should have it up and running soon. I am wondering if I should order a CT for a backup blade.

Cheers,
Bob

It's hard to know but it may have gotten stressed there during the welding. Very unlikely in the manufacturing of the blade as blade stock was sent to seller you bought it from in I think 200' or larger rolls. Send it back. I have over tensioned the 1/2" trimester blades and had them snap.

I got the 14" SUV.

http://www.woodcraft.com/Product/2083658/35880/Laguna-14-Bandsaw-3-HP-Leeson-Motor-LT14-SUV.aspx

Took 2 people to help get it out of my truck and into the shop. Unbelievably sturdy thing it is....
Can't wait to get it set up and running.

Cheers,
Bob

I would say that the blade was heated to hot or annealed improperly during the welding process and caused a change in the temper of the blade at that point . That having been said , in the last 10 yrs I have seen a severe drop in the quality of steel in the USA and im sure its world wide . That affects the bandsaw blade companies as well

Lenox Europe is blaming the welder, the welder is blaming the blade material. Nobody feels responsible for this, and also both are not showing any sign of interest in what happened.

Sad but true...

Herr D. Sorry to hear about your woes with the blade. Any chance you can show us a shot of that stack of BRW sides? Would love to see what that blade was working on... ;)

I'd say the fault was in the steel. I used to work with a bandsaw cutting tool steel up to 4" thick. We welded our own blades using a welder attached to the bandsaw. When the blades broke (often) it was on the weld or next to it in a part that had been heated in welding and not correctly annealed. That blade obviously broke outside the heated area.

goodonya getting your alias past the sensors at Sawmill Creek. They wouldn't even let me register under my real name because they claimed it was an alias.
You would think that woodworkers would get Dalbergia, but I guess not.

BTW, to me it looks like the problem is from the weld process overheating the band - a manufacturing defect

They both have agreed that this break shouldn't have happened. That's good.

Send it back, asking them to stand behind the product that they sold you.

At the very least they should cut out a few feet near the weld where the damage is, (both sides of the break), and then weld in another piece. You'd have a blade with two welds, but it would be fine for a spare, or to use in a pinch. For the amount of hassle fooling around with this blade they may just send a replacement.

If they lose the blade after sitting it in a corner while they decide what to do, ask them for a replacement.

Be firm and polite. I think it's definitely worth pursuing.

@Murray: here are the sides, the other picture is showing the backs.

Still no answer from the manufacturer or the welder / dealer...already send a friendly reminder asking where to ship back the blade, but seems like they do not even respond on this question anymore...well....you know this one epic record from the starting 90th....Nevermind.

Cheers, Alex

Too bad StewMac doesn't sell those blades….there would be no questions asked and no hassle of sending it back (unless they paid for it) and you'd already have your new one by now!

Ok....

so...the European Lenox branch office and the German responsible agent decided that I get a new blade for free, which was shipped from the workshop in Poland via the German distributor to me...

Not joking....Netherlands to Germany to Germany to Poland to Germany to me...not the blade itself, but just the decision.

Anyhow, I have a new blade, that's nice.
