This week on www.woodgears.ca Matthias builds a fairly simple cyclone out of a couple of 5 gallon buckets. Attached to his shop vac, it was 99.2% efficient in capturing sawdust before it got into the vac.

Seems like a lot of work to save 49.99 on a Dust Deputy...

it is that fine dust that is the health risk. Interesting and a nice project but not practical for a sizable operation.

The name catgut is confusing. There are two explanations for the mix up.

Catgut is an abbreviation of the word cattle gut. Gut strings are made from sheep or goat intestines, in the past even from horse, mule or donkey intestines.

Otherwise it could be from the word kitgut or kitstring. Kit meant fiddle, not kitten.

LOL, I have to agree with your comments about effort compared to just buying a Dust Deputy. Someone once made a similar comment to Matthias about the cost of his tools, materials and effort to create something that could be bought relatively cheaply and he responded along the lines: "but isn't that what woodworking is all about?". I think it's fair to say this also applies to those people that only intend to build one guitar.

Well in my country such things as dust deputy are not available at all.
Anyway my thoughts is that by engaging our minds in simple solutions like that, our minds get trained in the course of doing so.
So if any mistakes happening in the course of building guitars, we can be more innovative in finding a workable solution.
It's a neat idea!

Nothing wrong with that for sure. Myself, my workload is such that I really resent the time needed to make anything I can't actually sell...

I've long liked his style, making anything and everything. For him, the journey's the reason for building things, not the destination. That he ends-up with usable tools is but a bonus...

Not everyone lives in the States, shipping for a dust deputy is probably going to be 300 dollars or more, if it can be shipped at all.

Then this would certainly be more practical. I wonder how much one of those cyclone lids designed to fit on a standard garbage bucket would fare...

I like how the pictures on his site expand and contract too, with the text reformatting. Anyone know what kind of site that is?

The cyclone lids for 30 gallon garbage cans are excellent. I cycle my planer and jointer duct through one on the way to my outside dust collector. It would be nice if they made them to fit larger garbage cans. Cheap and effective.
