Very classy. [clap] [clap] [clap] Outstanding purfling and rosette; the colors really mate well and the pick guard sets it off.

That's a little beauty Haans! What do you use to cut your pickguards? I've only used clear and only because I've never taken the time to learn to cut coloured ones. Tried cutting one once and it wasn't pretty.

Cheers,
Danny

SWEET!

I like the treatment on the pickguard. If someone told me about them cutting it like that I wouldn't think it would look good but that looks right at home there.

Nice job.

Cheers
Bob

Outrageous Haans!

The name catgut is confusing. There are two explanations for the mix up.

Catgut is an abbreviation of the word cattle gut. Gut strings are made from sheep or goat intestines, in the past even from horse, mule or donkey intestines.

Otherwise it could be from the word kitgut or kitstring. Kit meant fiddle, not kitten.

Thanks folks!
Danny, I use a scissors! I cut it to about 1/8" of the line, then just shy of the line, and sand the rest of the way.
Robert, that's the way Larson's did some of their pickguards. Wide purfling and tight waists dictate it if you want a large pickguard.
Clinton, the white is holly...

Haans, I never get tired of looking at your purfling prowess! The pyramid bridges are pretty sweet too. Out of curiosity what's the string width at the saddle?

Purfling prowess! Sounds almost obscene...
Thanks, I think!
String spacing at the saddle is 2-3/8". It's a nice spacing for fingerpicking.

How do you do that Larson style purfling?

Steve, here are some photos of the lay up process for the center strips. The outside strips are made for me by Gurian.
Here is a layup of the pattern I chose.

Image

Glued and clamped into a block.

Image

A flat strip about is cut off and surfaced to around .080"

Image

On some early versions I used a herringbone strip split with a strip of teflon. It's basically done just like abalone purfling. You pull the strip of teflon after gluing in and cut strips to fit end to end.

Image

I began by cutting the strips on the bandsaw, but found the cuts too ragged for my taste. So, I got a used Proxxon mini saw and that works. The bandsaw is not terribly bad, but the Proxxon is just better.

Image

Here are a couple of variations in which you can see the difference between the bandsaw and Proxxon.

Image

Later, I developed the design for the outside purfling and had Gurian make up a batch for me. You can also see the endless possibilities of purfling design here in another Larson/Oscar Schmidt/Galiano style.

Image

Hope that helps...

I like everything about this guitar, I hardly ever find a guitar that doesn't have a single feature I would change.

Great job.

I love your design features and execution, Hans! It was great seeing how you make up that amazing purfling!

Thanks Beth.
I love using the stuff because it is easily recognizable as something different than the way overused, "popular" Marlin/Gilson type look. Oscar Schmidt instruments were supreme in their day and Larsons were every bit as good as those "popular" ones. Ole CF even said so.
