Todd,
My experience with thinned epoxy is that it does cure quicker (not slower) but it doesn't seem to reach the final hardness of un-thinned. For some reason this seems to be more true when using on mahogany. Once I took Pat Hawley's advice and started using heat I found I didn't need to thin it, the heat did that for me.

The part about warming the wood before the epoxy went on came from Todd Stock and an article I read about how to avoid amine blush. Todd said warm the wood to help the epoxy soak in and the article said warm the wood to drive off any moisture to avoid amine blush. Both seemed to be good reasons to me.

Pat's warming of the epoxy after it was on the wood, then brushing, was about producing a smooth, even finish to reduce sanding. Also a good reason.

Thanks for your input, Craig. Your experience with the Captain's varnish is interesting, too.

On necks, I've had good luck squeegeeing epoxy on and then wiping down with an alcohol socket rag.

Very interesting. I would have thought that would take the epoxy out of the pores as well as off the surface. But there you are, having success with that method.

Thanks for your reply, Joe. That all makes sense.

I've got one test going now with the Z-Poxy thinned 1:1 with alcohol and brushed on a test piece. Tomorrow I'll see how hard it has cured.

Meanwhile, I applied another coat to the back of this guitar, unheated (and unthinned), with a squeegee, and it went on well. Haven't yet tried another coat on the neck.

In my test, the Z-Poxy thinned 1:1 with alcohol and brushed on a test piece cured to the same hardness as the unthinned Z-Poxy (that is, as far as I can tell by poking and scratching at it with a fingernail and a couple other objects, which seems an accurate enough assessment to me).
