If I am not mistaken I think that is what PM's are for. Last I knew there was no restrictions on foul language, politics or religion if you are sending someone a PM...
How about making everyone use a real picture of themselves instead of an avatar. I think people would be much less prone to argue if the can see who they are talking with.

I still say everyone should listen to Leon Redbone, it will lower your blood pressure and put a smile on your face... (plus he plays a CF-100)

I mean how much better can a song lyrics get?

Quote:
Forget about the blues
Your Doin fine
Leave your cares and worries far behind
Loosen up your tie
Let the world creep by
Relax

Cheers,
Bob

The OLF will eventually stand for Old Luthiers Fighting. Nobody needs that.

Okay, I'm kidding about the fight section.

I guess that's why the threads get contentious, nobody can tell a joke when they see it? (Except maybe ZekeM.....)

I'm still kidding BTW, I know nobody wants to REALLY see a fight section.

The Tina Turner idea is great BTW...

?? "We need to get Tina turner to officiate and remember "two men enter, one man leaves". Lol"

"The Tina Turner idea is great BTW.."

If we're talking world population that might eventually solve the ivory issue. If we're talking the OLF things might get pretty lonely after awhile. laughing6-hehe

I was thinking the same thing zeke, you beat me to it!
I think we all need to chill out a bit, there is plenty of places on the web to debate politics and this place is probably not one.
I am a self avowed liberal but I have had the chance to meet many conservatives along the way and what I have learned over all is we may not agree on politics, but that doesn't make you a bad person. If we focus on what makes us alike (luthiery), we may find we have more in common than we realize.
My two cents

You're just too clever for your own good my friend. Even though I was just watching some curling, I pride myself on never growing up. I think I'll go work on a guitar............. or we could argue about hockey. Canada vs US, men's and women's. Too close for me to call. We'll know soon enough.

I believe both Hesh and the Padma are still here. That makes it a good day after all.

Padma's gone, at least when he messaged me on Facebook he said he was. He doesn't even know what he did, poor guy. He seemed kinda bewildered.

Do many of you frequent other similar forums? Do any of them have rules like here but are as loosely moderated?

The only other forum I participated in was OWWM (Old Woodworking Machines).

They had rules too but they were strictly enforced. I rarely saw a "questionable" post go for more than an hour before it was deleted or edited.

Yeah, some members got mad at the moderators, but I never saw members turn on each other like they do here for everyone to see & take sides.

Good point Kevin. I think Lance hopes it will run on the 'honor system'. It really should be able to , but from time to time Lance has to step in. I know it is not what he wants to do but sometimes his is forced too.... I think the way he moderates is excellent and keeps the forum alive.

On a serious note I'm sad to see anyone go. All that does is hurt the forum. It reduces the knowledge base, especially if the 3 gone are stock, Padma, and hesh. What a loss indeed! There are plenty who have said things that are out of line, myself included. Hopefully this is just temporary. Otherwise I feel that with those 3 others will go of their own choosing. I haven't seen any post from Filippo in a few days, I know him and stock seem pretty good friends. I hope he didn't leave as well.

I am a collector of sorts. I find this all extremely fascinating. I follow these type of threads all over the internet, and I must admit that I am very thankful to have saved screen shots of the entire ivory thread before it met its fortunate demise. It is truly a gem in my collection.
In essence, it is a study in the degradation of our society and the polarization that has rendered us an impotent people.
Godspeed my sawdusty survivors and friends.

Can you send me your collection?

I'm REALLY curious. It sounds extremely fascinating!

Maybe you can send me just the ones you consider to be the "Best of the Best"?

I kinda hope the ivory one is in that set, 'cuz I'd kinda like to see what I missed that finally did it in.

I really didn't read the thread except for a few of the comments. But..... you may have hit the nail on the head. Degradation and Polarization, yes it does seem to be true. I like to think of it as a not so slow decline into an 'uncivil society'. Oops!!! I hope this is not construed as political. I hate it when I disappear overnight. But the good news is I won't be missed.....

This thread is getting a little too politically charged for my liking. Maybe a highly offensive picture of Pan, the half man, half goat god would get us back on track?

I am on several forums, and my favorite is an old tools email discussion where you can't even post pictures - you have to give a URL. I'll bet in the 16 years I have been discussing hand tools with this group there have not been 2 or maybe 3 cases where someone went off the deep end and no one joined in and we asked that person to leave.

I am on 2 other guitar forums and they each have an "anything else" discussion. I only go there once in a while, but there are never any fights or bad words that I have seen.

This forum seems to be the only place I have seen hackles raised.

I visit a number of automotive forums on a daily basis.... this place is not upsetting at all.

Ever heard of YellowBullet.com? It's the Wild West - no mods and no rules. It's F-bombs to the left of me, and trolling to the right of me. Bragging, lying, name-calling, acid-drenched fury, and escalating threats galore.

This place is a grade school library in comparison.

This is a guitar forum and when you allow your politics to get involved , this can happen ego and passion can kill common sense. Religion and politics are best not discussed. To be honest many good luthiers left here for the similar reasons . There is a fine line an admin has to follow to keep a forum under control .
I hope we all learn from this and move on.
