Hi all,

I just went down to woodcraft and ran across this Rosewood set for $60. They had 3 sets there but this one jumped out at me because it was about 2 times darker than the others. It was only marked Rosewood and the guy there wasn't sure what it was.

Any ideas? My guess is EIR but that is really only a guess. My Parlor is EIR but this looks darker than that.

Call me crazy, but that looks like EIR to me...

Looks like a nice set of Indian to me.

The back is almost identical to an EIR back on my current build!

I'm guessing EIR also. It's the only tonewood sets I've ever found at my Woodcraft store, but you can't argue with the price.

I'd say EIR too, a lot nicer than the sets at my store BTW.

I thought it was EIR but because it is so dark I was not really sure. Still new at trying to ID exotic woods so I figured you all would know.

Yea I saw them and couldn't pass them up for the price and it was exactly what I went there to find. Not a B/S set but I decided to do my bindings in Rosewood to match the sides of my little Parlor. I will just cut a strip off the sides and then put these up on the shelf for another build.

Good catch. The local Woodcraft here had some sets the last time I was in but they were pretty washed out, color-wise.

I'll echo what others have said... my local woodcraft had a few sets a while back but nothing even close to that nice. Heck, most of the old growth stuff I get straight from India isn't that nice.

Well I think I was just in the right place at the right time. They had 3 sets but this one jumped right out because it was so dark and very different from the others. When I picked it up I taped it and it has a really nice deep tone and a lot more sustain than the others did. Plus it was cheaper than the others. I assumed it was because it has a small knot or divot in the very top and one of the sides has a bit of a twist, but I don't think either will be a problem. It also had some white(ish) streaks on it but after I got it home I ran my #7 plane over it a few times and they came right off.

I love it when you find a score like this. Now if I could only find a set of quilted Maple as cheap...
