Thanks for the update, Shane. I'm eagerly awaiting delivery. Your advice on how best to store these tops and brace wood and an estimate as to how soon they might be ready for use would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks again,

Just received an e-mail from Shane saying my wood has been shipped today. Assume I'm not the only lucky one so keep your eyes focused on the mail man. Thanks again Shane.

Thanks David. Certainly have mixed emotions about the decision but I will get to make guitars now which is what I really wanted to do. So I do hope to be on line a bit more with progress documentation when I can.

Shane

Just wanted to let everyone know that it looks I have an interested party that wants to continue with the spruce and cedar tonewood portion of the business. That is great news as I may need more wood one day as well! I am away now until the end of February and the new owner is away from Terrace until the second week of February. I have agreed to help them get started and be available to answer any of their questions at anytime. They will end up with my saw that will compliment their Woodmizer and Lucas mills and their Woodmizer Resaw. I have also included a full log from the same tree as the recent sets that have been shipped. I also have more sets that are ready to ship once I get home and I did ship a bunch more before I left last Sunday. Between the two of us we will ensure that all of the current will be filled and and any new orders will ship from the new owner. As they are full time wood processors it is my hope that you all should more wood generally available which is good news. Anyway, I will update more on this once the new people and I complete the deal and decide how the transition will look. I will introduce them in anew thread once we make a few decisions on contact information and the like. They also plan to keep this company going as the longest standing supporter of the OLF!

Thanks
Shane

That's all good news!
I hope you also included some training on how to split the billets and cut the wood to the right dimensions.
I'm sure you did.

Why do I have a hard time believing that. You will more than likely need a separate vehicle or two when you move just to handle the stash.

I took delivery today, Shane. Great looking wood to my eye! Thanks for the quick turnaround from standing tree to tops and bracewood right at my doorstep.

I'll be storing these in an extra bedroom that I've converted into a workspace. I assume that I should sticker everything for a while? Any advice on how long I should wait before using the wood? Also, would you recommend I cut the bracewood into smaller blanks, or is it okay to leave it as is for now?

Yes, I'm a newbie to buying in bulk. :-)

Thanks again!

Hi George,

The tops are thin and will acclimate to your environment quite quickly. I did not dry this batch as much as I usually do because of the volume and the time constraints but still the tops will be ready probably in 3 or 4 weeks. I don't sticker any of my wood once it is surface dry. I do have large stack of bracewood sawn to 1/4" wide strips for the major braces that I have ready to go and leave some pieces larger for the upper bars. The bracewood would take a couple more months at current thickness but only 3 weeks or so at 1/4" thick.

Hope that helps!
Shane

That is very helpful indeed! I'm looking forward to working with this wood. I think it's fun to have a little stronger or more direct connection than one typically has with the materials we all use. It just adds another layer of interest to an already fascinating story--at least I think so.

Thanks for the tips!

Just paid import duty on a parcel from Canada - fingers crossed!

Catgut is an abbreviation of the word cattle gut. Gut strings are made from sheep or goat intestines, in the past even from horse, mule or donkey intestines.

Otherwise it could be from the word kitgut or kitstring. Kit meant fiddle, not kitten.

My delivery arrived (didn't even know it had left!)
Looks good, seems stiff and generally well cut.
Seemed quite light compared to most of the Sitka I have, so measured it, around 370Kg/M3 from a couple of measurements.
Stickers at the ready. bliss
Thanks Shane.

Colin:
By the look of that brace wood you must have a lot more tops stashed away. If your shipment is the same as mine it is very, very, nice wood.
Glad to hear it got there safe and sound.
Tom
