Hi Folks,

I'm considering buying a set of Brazilian. It looks real nice and the seller says there is CITES paper to go with it. But laying out that kind of cake makes me a little nervous. Are there any intelligent questions that I could ask to verify the legitimacy of the CITES papers?

Thanks...

I got a set that came with cites paperwork but it was a photocopy of an original so I don't know how well it would stand up to scrutiny. I wouldn't send it international with what I have. Maybe a raised seal or something would prove legality?

I would start by reading everything on the Environment Canada website http://www.ec.gc.ca/cites/ . I don't have experience with Braz which has the highest level of CITES restriction, but I have brought in Mahogany which is one notch lower on the CITES chain. Some of the paperwork needs to be originals, some can be copies. There are a variety of permits and inspecition certificates you need. And I believe for something like Braz you need a CITES import permit, not just export documentation from the sending country. If you don't have your ducks in a row you may never get your wood. A customs broker can be really helpful for sorting out and filing the proper papers.

Contact you local government responsibilities and ask BEFORE!!!!!! You may need first permission for importing. Alos depends if you are buying as a company or a private person. Get evrything clear before, and therfore you have to ask the real people. Which country are you from, and which country do you want to import from?

Cheers, ALex

I've decided against it. I don't really have time to do the proper paper research, or even really know where to begin. Plus, I just had to drop another few k on tooling, so it's not really a true priority, even if it is a guaranteed moneymaker. I'll wait til something comes up already in Canada...

If you look at the "snow parlor" thread, the two guitars people are oooing and ahhing over are made with two of the most common woods.
If you have a customer who has to have BRW let them supply it.

You could do like Collings....buy it from the prospective guitar customer for $300, then charge them $1500 extra for using BR.

Not too long ago there was a Canadian seller on Ebay that listed a bunch of BR sets.

Let's sidestep the political banter and get back to the question.

not quite sure how you "sidestep political banter" with a product that is heavily regulated, politically, and those reasons were the original reason that the thread was posted. please define "CITES" in an apolitical manner...

I have a set of Brazilian with CITES paperwork. Seemed like a good idea at the time, but did you know that the CITES paperwork has an expiration date? Mine expired in October of 2013. I wasn't ready to build with it, but in my opinion, if you read CITES carefully, it says you can't change the wood. So to quote a famous person, "What difference does it make?" OOps - not supposed to be political! [headinwall] gaah
