by some random coincidence i strung up my 2nd exactly a year to the day after i strung up my first. took much longer than it should have, i kind of got side tracked, bought a house as well as starting 3 others before finishing this one.

this one is just like the first one i built, mahogany back and sides, sitka top but this one has wenge for the bindings and inlay. the back of the headstock inlay is inspired from jim watts's work. i've been lucky enough to live close enough to be able to drive down and pick his brain about this guitar stuff.

i'm really happy with how this guitar sounds. it has this sustain that just goes on and on, kind of like when you play a piano with the sustain pedal down. a single string sets off all the others, i love it!

so i entered the guitar in the annual taos art show. its a juried show and 145 artists were accepted. somehow my guitar won best of show. felt like a great honor in such an artistically diverse community and it was really nice to have my guitar appreciated as art. seems kind of ridiculous when you compare it to all the amazing work i see here but i think we all could be please that in this instance guitar building was seen as art.

I love the back of the headstock with the inlay. That is a very nice touch and nice workmanship for a second guitar.

i gave this one to my dad. i miss playing it, it's pretty easy to get attached to these things after spending so much time making them. now i'm trying to finish up two more, a gibson j-185ish with a cutaway and a 000. hopefully they don't take nearly as long as this one.

Congratulations! Of course it is art. It is also a living artwork as it provides someone else the ability to produce art on it and the opportunity for others still to be blessed by their art. That's why I love this luthiery game. We are part of a perpetual artistic expression and appreciation.

Well, perhaps not when I play, but you know what I mean.

I kind of argree but I wonder, what does that make the manufactorers of oil paint or canvas or video cameras etc? It's certainly one reason why artists should hold the reins on their egos. I work in an art school, I have experience of this.
