My first burst didn't turn out perfectly. Is there a way to remove it without having to sand it off? I sprayed three coats of em6000 under the burst. Any ideas?

I've been there more than once Chris. Paint stripper works well for nitro. Not sure about 6000. I used electical tape and masked off about 1/8" into the top and then covered the rest of the guitar. Once you peel the tape off I sanded the thin strip around the edge back to wood. I've also stripped back and sides and left the top. It works well.

Good Luck

done it a couple of times with em6000...best method I have found...ROS 100 and 150 grit followed by finer grits.... 1 hour worth of work ....strippers are nasty

Sure no question about that Wes. The plus side is they don't change the top thickness. Not an issue if you have some to spare.

I have been having luck with some of the newer water based strippers for my re-finish work on all types of factory finishes, including poly. They take longer than the old chemical stuff and you still need gloves but no fumes.

I have used the soy-based stuff from LV with success removing EM6000 from a solid maple top.

I ended up sanding the burst off, adding a couple new clear coats under it, and respraying the burst. Much happier this time around.

Trying to work their way through college. No harm in that. The clientele is usually much nastier.

Chris,
Can you let us see how the burst came out?

Attempt 1- lesson learned: going to fast will not yield a symmetric pattern (at least not for me)
Attempt 2- lesson learned: don't remove dust/particles from a still wet colored finish. It will ruin an otherwise great looking burst.
I just resanded and resparyed for attempt 3. It looks good so far, but we will see if I can get it all the way through finish without sanding through. I would really like to not mess this one up. I will post a photo at some point.

I think every burst I have done has at least 3 tries. Over 5/8"maple. A little more forgiving....
Stick with it - 3 is the charm!
