I'm thinking about giving oil a try for finish to a neck. I'm not sure what I'll use. Most likely danish oil. It has a nice feel. Or possibly wiping polyurethane. Or possible equil parts polyurethane, boiled linseed oil, and thinner with a shot of Japan Dryer.

I'm just wondering if anyone uses it with nitro on the head stock. I do like a shiny head stock and would be nice to have the back and sides of the headstock nitro also but I can't visualise a transition point. I suppose if it had a volute you might do it there. I've only handled one guitar that had it done. It was a beautifully built Maccaferri by a very well respected Canadian builder. A very cool guitar in all aspects accept the finish transition on the neck. I won't go into details but it had the look of a high school woodwork project. But the neck felt great. It was a Mahogany neck and had been well played and pores in the neck were getting dark. Looked and felt good.

And what about Maple? Has anyone done one and what does it look like in 5 years?

I used Liberon finishing oil on my last one, but nitro on the headstock face plate. I oiled first and then taped it up and sprayed. There is quite a difference in the thickness of the two finishes, the nitro being much thicker, so there is a noticeable "lip", but otherwise it worked nicely. Not sure if that is of any help?

On some of my electrics I've done tung oil on the neck and nitro laquer on the headstock face only.

I do just the face surface and so the back and sides of the headstock are oiled.

It's a very clean look, simple.

Transitions aren't necessary.

If you're doing an oil with poly finish, try Poly Oil that Minwax makes. It comes in satin and gloss.
It's a good product for necks - at least that's my experience.

Thanks guys. That's probably what I'll do. I suppose you could just do a bit more of a build up on the back and sides of the head and hit it with the buffer.

Thanks Jim, I've used that on a couple small projects and it is a nice product. I bet the satin would be nice on a neck. I still have some kicking around. I think I'll give it a try.

Ditto what GW said. Danish oil and MinWax wipe on poly everywhere but the headstock veneer. That gets nitro.
