It can be difficult to recommend because he may already have lots of tools

Not too exciting, but how about some clamps because 'you can never have too many clamps'

My in-laws very kindly gave me a Stew-Mac gift certificate and I used it to get some very useful items.

Also, the suggestion of a Fretboard Journal subscription is astute. It's an incomparable source of information and inspiration.

If you're getting a straight edge, make sure it is 30" long, not 24"........I'm just sayin'...

The most used tool in my shop is a metal 6" ruler graduated to 1/8", 1/16", 1/32", and 1/64", with 1/32" graduations on the ends. It's my little buddy. Definitely get him one of those if he doesn't have it. Oh, and a nice shop apron is good to have (I like leather). Lots of great ideas here. Might be good to take all the knowledge you have obtained and do some sleuthing in his shop, to see what he might already have.

The most basic tools needed are: chisel, plane, saw, clamps. A nice LN or Veritas plane would be a good gift, if he doesn't have one. Maybe a set of wooden cam clamps.
