I've seen both in Google searches. Are both correct?

A rose by any name....

would have just as many thorns

The name catgut is confusing. There are two explanations for the mix up.

Catgut is an abbreviation of the word cattle gut. Gut strings are made from sheep or goat intestines, in the past even from horse, mule or donkey intestines.

Otherwise it could be from the word kitgut or kitstring. Kit meant fiddle, not kitten.

According to frets.com FAQ's page:
"Lutherie is the craft of building instruments."

"Luthiery is the place in which it's done."

Can't speak to the latter, but the former is definitely correct. I'm basing this on Godin using the word; I definitely won't contradict the French on how to speak it :)

unless it's name was Rosa banksiae. they don't have any thorns. that's just one example, but there are many varieties of roses that are thornless

I love when I search ebay using the luthier or lutherie terms and ebay automatically changes it to Lutheran because it thinks I made a mistake...Mike
