A friend asked me to take a look at an old guitar he had. Someone converted it to left handed by turning the nut 180 degrees then had to put a toothpick in front of the nut to hold the strings up.

I have heard of this and using wooden match sticks for a broken nut for a quick fix during a gig. Not for a long-term fix to adjust string action.
