Up-spiral; down-spiral; straight cut? Other? Both front and rear head stock veneers will be attached and want to use the proper bit to avoid tear-out and other such ugliness.

I use a bearing guided straight cut. But I don't see why a spiral cut wouldn't work.

I general use a down cut spiral. However last time I grabbed an up cut spiral and it worked fine as well. I haven't had any issues with tear-out. I start by using a slightly oversize template guide and I cut the depth of the slots in 3-4 passes, increasing the depth with each pass. Once the slots are through the headstock, I use a smaller teplate guitar and do a full depth pass to clean up the slots.

I am using a luthiertool.com slotting setup. http://luthiertool.com/slot%20head%20fixture.html
