I took a four week course in the summer where I built my first under the tutelage of a professional (Jeremy Hamm at Pembina Valley Luthiers). Does that disqualify me?

I'm close to starting my first solo build. It won't be a kit.

I'm not sure if i can finish in 6 months (I'm still tooling and jigging up) but I think I'd throw my hat in the ring.

No it wont disqualify you , however , you may be scrutinized a little more lolol laughing6-hehe

Nice turnout so far [:Y:] Glad to see we have so many new builders entering the fray.

I was debating whether to sponsor one of these anyway, so since I'm not qualified to compete, I'd be happy to put up a prize of some sort. Not sure exactly what... I've got a good stash of guitar woods and inlay materials to pick from, but living in USA, Lacey Act pretty much prevents me from mailing most of it outside the country.

Tools are good for newbies though. Maybe a wooden plane for jointing plates? Certainly improved my life when I made one, and I've been meaning to make a couple other planes for myself, so I could just do them all at once.

Thank you Dennis , we will talk . I have an idea about this . [:Y:]

I'd be interested. Maybe this would be the motivation I need to actually start bending wood instead of collecting it.

This sounds very interesting. Being that I'm in the midst of my first - and at it for 2-1/2 years so far - with raw materials in my possession for the second (both of which include donated materials and tools) I don't doubt that I would qualify but I doubt I could pull off an entire build in 6 months because life is just too demanding right now. If pressed, I'd say no based solely on the time limit. That being said, I'm curious to see how other newbies would fare and I wish everyone who will be taking part the best of luck.

I vote for no spending limit on this one. This will be trying enough for most w/o having to worry about staying under a budget gaah

I started my first build back in May of last year and I am about 2 months away from finishing it. The guitar is a scratch build that I have been building under the watchful eye of a professional luthier. Despite the guidance that I am receiving I can confirm that I have done all the actual work on the guitar with my own hands. Let me know if this build qualifies.

I haven't read this whole thread......but might I suggest giving a first time builder more than 6 months to finish? They usually have a lot of jigs to build and tools to buy and run into issues where they have to ask questions and wait on answers before proceeding so It usually goes fairly slow. If your like me, all the tool purchases were spreadout, to not impact the budget all at once, so often I was waiting on answers to posts to find out which tool to buy then waiting on it to arrive, then waiting till I had some free time to use the tool so it slows things down.

Just a thought.

+1
I'd say maybe 9 months. A lot of the guys around here make it look easy to whip up a guitar in less than a month, but really it's not. My first build took 10, and it's still a challenge for me to get it under 3.

6 for a second build would be reasonable, but for a first it would be a race just to finish, nevermind making a decent sounding and playable instrument, with proper research into all the tool options to avoid buying expensive things you don't really want/need. But I don't see any reason to have separate time limits. If the second timers finish early... more time to make videos :)

This thread is interesting timing. I just received all my materials from LMI (an unserviced kit that just includes all the woods and parts) for my first build. I'd love to enter. I have been a furniture maker in my spare time for about 4 years in a strictly hand tool based shop. So I think the 6 month deadline is probably not doable for me as I am still tooling up for this build. But either way I will give it a shot and if I don't finish then oh well.

I've been lurking for a fair old while, but am finally in a position to start my first acoustic build having already completed a thin line Telecaster last year so count me in.

Sorry bud , this one wouldnt qualify . However if you wish to start another to finish during the challenge then you can use that.

It would appear we have ( 15 ) thus far , I have no problem making the challenge 9 months for the newbie group . I have no issue with a " no spending limit " on the builds either , newbie ruins a top and has to replace it could kill his budget . I WANT THIS to draw people out and get them building .

I am going to ask lance to start the 2013 Newbie Challenge thread and I will put some basic rules in place and we will get this game on ! [:Y:]

Wow! what timing. I was going to jump on the next build anyway, but was rather nervous being a newbie. This is perfect. I'm in!

I built a one-off electric last year. Well, last couple of years to be honest. It was slow so I'm all for The 9 month 1st baby time limit. Looking forward to this one!
