I feel it should be members only. After all registering as a member is not an onerous task.

agreed. i don't know if the forum software lets you filter our non-registered user votes or if we have to start over.

While its true non members can vote , I doubt that any would resort to that kind of action to get votes . I guess its possible , but I wouldn't worry about it to much myself . Just my 2 cents worth.

I noticed that when I logged in using explorer and wasn't auto logged in (but could still vote). I was going to send my friends a link because some of them were interesed in the challenge. Knowing they could vote, I elected not to send it. Even though I would have instructed them not to vote for me just because they are my friend, the temptation to do so would be there. . .

I would rather have 0 votes than a whole bunch and know that most of them were just popularity votes.

Edit: I forgot to add that I don't see a problem with people who are makers or repair people voting if they are not members here. Though it is hard to argue that them registering to an additional proum of interest would be too onerous. . .

My Daughter is 13 and watches the challenges , Last night she went on as a non member , listened to the vids , looked over the pics and made her own choice . I did not tell her who my choice was , she picked one different than I did , her own decision . Guys with all due respect , this could get blown out of proportion fast .... Keep it a friendly challenge and dont sweat the " coulda woulda shoulda's "

I couldn't agree more, just mentioning what I did. There are several entries that deserve to win and I don't want my well intentioned Aunt Mable dilluting the votes that they will get. . . Not really a big deal for me as a few friend votes wouldn't put me over the top anyway. . .

I'm with wudwerker on this one. It's a friendly competition based on honesty. I think if you can trust the participants to play by the rules during the challenge then you can probably trust them during the voting also. I think having non members can benefit the voting by having some votes from individuals who don't know the contestants.

I'm pretty sure that only members can post. When I get on from my phone I always have to log in before I can post anything. The poll is an exception because it gave me the option to vote without logging in, but I can't comment on anything without a username and password.

You can't post without registering, but you can vote in polls. Kind of odd, but not a big deal to me. I agree that this should be kept as friendly and low key as possible. It's about the process, not the prize. Does allowing non-members to participate in polls encourage people to stick around, read more, and maybe join later? I don't know. Could be a good thing.

Makes me wonder if the next challenge should be " NEWBIES ONLY Kit Build " would give the regulars a break and maybe encourage some to finally give it a shot .

How about some ideas for rules along this line ?

Obviously I agree with this, I didnt know that the polls could be voted on by non registered members. I do know that over the years there have been a hand full of times that "guest" posts have shown up.
Filippo, could you direct me to where this change would be made?

Thanks!

Not to beat a dead horse, but I agree with the sentiments above. We are all honorable here, If we can trust each other not to cheat by starting early or fudging our costs. . . we can assume that no one is outright cheating the vote too. If the winner cheated we would never know anyway, but every brace they carved with the prize would come out wrong :)

I'm not sure that this is common knowledge, but the polls we conduct appear to be open to the public in the sense of allowing guests (e.g., those not logged in as members) to vote. This would imply that folks could garner considerable non-OLF participation in a poll by asking their friends, acquaintances, etc. to drop by this site and vote.

I'll leave it to others to determine if this is always desirable, sometimes desirable, or never desirable....just thought it was worth mentioning.

I think we're all locked down now.
Fillippo gave me some tips today and from my end it seems to be fixed.

How many votes came from outside OLF? Is this a reasonable concern?

I'm sure this can be figured out in the inner workings of the forum, I will say tho, that it's over my head. I will poke around and see if I can find anything.

Geez, I was going to get ALL my friends to vote for Tony.

But then I decided that two votes probably wouldn't help all that much.....

cheers. :| :D

Lance,

I don't have a dog in the fight. In fact it took me all day to figure out what this was about. Just wondering. I wouldn't dig into this unless some of the interested parties cared.

How about only the builders in the challenge, done or not. get to vote. And you can't vote for yourself. We know who were in the challenge. Send a msg. reply in the next week. and be done with it. Ifs its a tie, leave it to lance or the prize maker.

I thought the point was for the community to vote. And participants, as members of the community, can vote for anyone they want, including themself :) At least, that's how we did last time, and it seemed to work well. Otherwise it seems a little exclusive to the rest of the forum. Especially those who have been following and commenting on the builds since the beginning.

Guest/non-builder votes are a bit more iffy, but it doesn't bother me as long as no one goes campaigning for large numbers of people who will vote for them without considering the others. But I don't think there's much danger of that.

Making non-builders sign up before voting seems kind of annoying, but is probably better to prevent multi-voting, which would only need one troll to make us have to redo the whole thing.

It looks like the changes you made have stopped some pictures from showing up unless one is logged in. On the wood i.d. thread this message showed up :

You do not have the required permissions to view the files attached to this post.

When I logged in I got the picture... I believe this is something new.
