I plan to use a a non-belly bridge on the 00 I'm building.......sort of a pyramid without the pyramids if you will. I also would like to use a 1/8" thick bone saddle. So I'm curious, can I use a 1/8" saddle and still have room for the peg holes on a 1" deep bridge? And if not, how deep do I need to make the bridge?

For the record, the bridge I'll likely use is quartersawn so I'll likely angle the bridge pin holes parallel to the saddle so the holes aren't lined up on a grain line.

I've done a quite a few with no issues. I most always do 1/8" saddles.

Thanks for that feedback.

Are you using a 3 deg or 3 1/2 deg angle on the saddle slot?

How much meat are you leaving in front of the saddle on the treble end where it's nearest the front of the bridge?

And finally, are you using any rearward angle on the saddle slot or are you cutting it at 90deg?

Darryl,

I'm building a small guitar and I'm planning to use a 1" bridge but am very inexperienced to cannot tell you how it has gone in the past.

Here's the spec's on StewMac's 1" deep pyramid bridges. Maybe that will help?

To be clear, what I'm asking below is if anyone used a saddle that was angled back and still had plenty room to fit everything in a 1" deep bridge. And if you did, how far was the treble end of the saddle from the front of the bridge (how much meat was left in front of the saddle).

I'm a little confused Darryl. Doesn't that spec sheet for the StewMac 1" pyramid bridges linked above clearly show the dimensions you are asking for? I haven't built one personally but I assume that those dimensions are tried and true and should work - unless I really don't understand your question.

It's there, but it's not clear. The StewMac detail shows 0.180" to the center of a 3/32" slot, leaving 0.133" from the front of the slot to the front of the bridge. I believe you could go a bit less, probably down to 0.10" or so.

Larry, thanks for the link to the drawing. In that drawing, the saddle slot is at 90deg to the top of the bridge. If I slant the slot to the rear of the guitar, either the top of the slot will be closer to the pin holes or the front of the slot will be closer to the front of the bridge. Just curious how close I can go to the front of the bridge without weakening the bridge too much.

Rodger gave some guidance in his post, thanks!

I see Darryl. Thanks for clarifying - again. I'm curious to see what you come up with as I'm contemplating a very similar bridge design - no angle at this point but who knows..
