Hey Fred,
I used about 10% mixture of flattening agent...I had used it before on a few necks, but not on a sunburst body...The matte sunburst was requested by my customer... at first I wasn't sure, but it's sorta 'growing' on me.....

Nice, I'm finishing my 14 fret O. Different body style entirely.

Thanks for that Jack. Is the flattening agent made by Belhen also? On your necks, do you know if they will stay matte or do they polish to a gloss with use? I really like the feel of a matte neck.

I had asked about matte sunbursts on this and one other forum, but didn't really receive any feedback.
I used the flattening agent , a Belhen's product, at the rate of about 10% flattening agent to the already thinned ( 90% lacquer to 10% thinner) not only in the top coats, but the sunburst coats as well...I had taped ( masking tape) the purfling/binding and the rosette rings off, along with the sides and sprayed the amber coat, followed by a mix of red mahogany and brown ( from StewMac).... after I was satisfied with the color coats and how the burst looked, and very soon after they were dry to the touch, I removed the masking tape...I found early on in my sunbursts, that if I left the tape on too long, it left a ridge that was near impossible to make look/feel right....as soon as I removed the tape, I tacked the surface one last time then I sprayed clear coats, ( already mixed with flattening agent) probably about 3 coats...I let the guitar set overnight, and even though the clear had melded and lessened the ridge, I still sanded the binding/purfling area lightly and added a couple more clear , flattener included coats....
I let the whole thing set for two weeks before assembling...

The flattening agent is Belhen's also... I believe it came from StewMac...
I finished a small size 5 guitar for my granddaughter this past December... a clear coated matte finish, and yes,om the neck, it has a tendency to gloss up a bit...I believe that's just the nature of matte finishes...I too like the feel of a matte finished neck.
I'm usually not clear in my replies, so if I have left any thing out or there are more questions I'd be glad to try to answer them....

Ok, one other question. I'm guessing you you try for perfect final coats. You probably wouldn't sand and buff out your last coats like a high gloss finish would you.

I see Mohawk, which is the same as Belhens I believe, carries flattening paste hare in Canada.
