How much did the Gerry jig cost? When did he make them? I think I pm'd him once but didn't hear back. Maybe we could lure him out of retirement with a group buy.

Here's my bindings router set-up. It's got elements from various machines on the OLF and others. Thanks to all of you.
About the only thing I didn't copy was the spring to make it light and safer and perhaps the router on/off foot pedal. It is real hard to build something from photos, with a lot of miss-steps and various revisions but I got it done finally and I'm real happy with it.

This jig is credited to Dan Forbet - although I can't find any reference/history of Dan. It requires the same skill level to build as a Williams jig. I've built both and I like this one better. Thx, Tony

So.... why doesn't someone run with the Garry Hallam design and make something for sale to all of us that are interested.

Seems like there is a market out there to be tapped for the right person with the right skills.

The reviews on this system are so positive.

Wish I had the tools/skills to do this. Somebody could really serve the luthier community and make a little jack at the same time!

If Gary was making a mint out of these things, do you think he would have stopped making them?

Gary is a machinist, and a member over at Luthier Community. This was a one time deal that came up in a thread over there. Don't think he ever thought it would be a money making proposition. As I recall he made 10 of them, only.

I have a wire welder and I am pretty good at welding. I had to get certified by I-Car when I was in the auto collision biz. I have thought about making Jim Olson's version or Garry's but it was easier to just buy one from Garry. I would rather use tools than build them, OK, I'm lazy. laughing6-hehe

Making jigs isn't as profitable as one may think. It takes skills and skills . Where things fall is making one costs a lot more than making 20 when it comes down to a per piece but it is having a market to sell things.
Having used all the jigs out there , the one common thread to a good binding machine is control and elimination of variability. Being able to hold true and lastly affordability. There is a reason the williams/fleishamn jig is so popular as it can be made affordable. It is reliable and not overcomplicated .
When I started I tried every jig out there. All that I used from Jim Williams , dog bone styles, tilt routers etc , it wasn't until I found the Tom Ribbeke design that I got my binding to be more professional. Once the williams/fleishamn was made available the one input of feel was added and I have been using that ever since.
As for trim routers I swapped out to ridgid as this has a very secure way to mount it. Making a unit out of metal and while it would be a very good production device it gets very costly.
As long as your design will hold the router true in all 3 planes that is what matters most. It needs to make the processes repeatable and accurate.

Tony,
Dan lives in the Dallas area and is a member of L.I.N.T. (Luthiers Interactive of North Texas) as am I.
He has some pretty good instructions for building it on the lint site.Thats why my machine looks so much like his.

Thx Rusty. I made mine based on pictures and I like it better than the Williams jig I built. I'm going over to L.I.N.T. to check it out. Thx again, Tony
