I am starting a new build of an OM style instrument using Ovankol for back and sides, which I have never used before. I'm going for a versatile guitar, suitable for both fingerstyle and flatpicking. What I am asking of you wise and experienced builders out there is a recommendation for top material. I have Sitka and Engleman spruce. as well as western Red Cedar. What do you think?

Thanks!

Pete

Ovankol can support some fairly harsh overtones. I'd go with the Engelmann.

Hi Pete - I wouldn't call myself either experienced or wise  but I recently built a GA sized cutaway in Ovangkol with a WRC top. It ended up with a lovely well rounded tone, and the Ovangkol is great to work with [:Y:]

Here she is with her new owner :

Richard, your instrument sounded great to me. Looked great, too. And the owner is obviously very proud and happy. Pete, there's fine example of what is possible!

Thanks for the information. Such a beautiful tone on your GA, Rick! I think I'll go with WRC
