I haven't really posted much in the way of instruments in a few years, so I figure it's time to show my latest project, a ukulele bound for Japan when it's done. The face will be yellow, and the bridge will fill in the gap...

This is my first project done mostly on the CNC...the soundholes, the side port, the neck, the back and inlay work.

So here's my latest Smiley-Uke (TM), in the white:

Black Acacia, Engelmann Spruce, Curly Maple bindings. Some ebony appointments here and there.

Don, I think it's a fun concept for a uke--and nicely built, too. Let's see a finished picture soon.

Way too cute, Don! I see you have the name trademarked so no other OLFers can steal it. Good idea.

I saw that over at the Build Challenge Don. Made me smile there and made me smile again. Great idea. Bet it will sound good too.

Cheers,
Danny

I'm just getting started in building ukes. Never had an interest in them but recently started to have some. That is a cool concept Don. Just as cool as the pineapple ukes in my opinion...Mike

Don, I really like it. In fact, I can't imagine anyone not loving it and that is actually very hard to accomplish from an artistic standpoint. Very, very well done!!!

Thanks Simon. This started out as a whimsical instrument back in '03 while I was in the middle of IMing with Lance. I was trying to figure out what to do for a New England Luthiers group ukulele project, and had a serious uke planned. Then I saw the Smiley avatar/icon thing and got the idea. Here's the first one. The new one has evolved to look a little different, but the same basic idea.

This one was built with maple from Lowes, I believe.

Todd, Dying to work on the Size 5, but I also have the OM to finish, and some repairs on my dad's guitar to do. We lost his brother this week, so I' feeling the need to escalate the priority of my dad's work over the other stuff. He's not getting younger. I'm afraid the 5 will have to wait, much as I'm dying to make it.

Thanks Chris! I like it too!

Thanks Steve...it's got some issues though, a couple places where the binding didn't snug up well to the purfling on the headstock, and some less than stellar miters. Oh well. It's not a Kinnaird, but I'm striving for that level. Someday!
