I've been working on a tenor ukulele where the customer wanted an inlay with a tiger. This is the first full fretboard inlay I've attempted, and it uses some of the techniques I learned at a week-long class I attended in early July that was taught by Grit Laskin. The focus of the class was inlay design with a full day devoted to his technique of inlaying on a radiused fretboard.

Anyway, I thought I would share it and throw it out there for comments. I just installed the frets yesterday, so there is some glue clean up needed, and there are some rough engraving spots that need to be cleaned up, but not until the very end.

Constructive criticism - the corner of the tiger's mouth doesn't look quite right - kind of too rounded. Did you work from a photograph?

That's a really nice piece of work.
The only comment I would make is that it does actually look like it was copied from a Chinese print - not intended as a criticism in a negative sense, just an observation.

The name catgut is confusing. There are two explanations for the mix up.

Catgut is an abbreviation of the word cattle gut. Gut strings are made from sheep or goat intestines, in the past even from horse, mule or donkey intestines.

Otherwise it could be from the word kitgut or kitstring. Kit meant fiddle, not kitten.

Here is my criticism, and it is meant to be constructive:

The final sanding of the fretboard looks like it was done after the frets were installed. This leaves an uneven appearance because it is next to impossible to sand right up to the edge of a fret. I recommend that the inlays be completed and the surface sanded to final grit (at least 600 cami) before fretting. Install the frets and then place masking tape over the entire fretboard leaving only the frets exposed. Do all fret dressing work then remove tape when done. If you are careful you can end up with a perfect surface on your fretboard and this will enhance any inlay work. Very nice inlay by the way.

Barry, I know exactly what you are saying. And it needs to be better. The surface of the inlay was actually finish sanded, although to 400 grit. The roughness is I think because I glue in my frets and I haven't gotten all the residue off yet. And I did tape before I fretted. Getting a really clean fretboard, inlay or no, is something I've always struggled with. I always end up cleaning up with progressively finer micro mesh no matter how careful I am or carefully I tape.
