No Alex, certainly not! We had to learn English the hard way, by reading and writing. Unfortunately we really have no excuse!

And "loose" instead of "lose". That's the worst for me and it seems the most prevalent.

How about "for all intensive purposes"? Or "could of/should of/would of"?

Thanks for bringing this up! As a non-native English speaker (and fully aware that I may be throwing giant stones in the glass house, here), I have to say that I am sometimes surprised by the poor spelling abilities among among many of you native speakers. I guess for some it is caused by dyslexia or some other learning disability, but in most cases I suspect it is carelessness, trying to sound hip/funny/cool/whatever, or just plain laziness. That is harder to excuse, or even understand, for me.

Usually, I have no problem understanding what people actually mean, but between bad spelling and usage, acronyms and abbreviations, Internet slang and technical terms (and Imperial measurements! But let's not go there...), things can get quite confusing, at least for an outsider such as me. It probably takes me much longer that most to compose whatever I post here, and I'm certainly aware that my English is far from perfect, but its not because I'm trying to be cool, I can assure you! I sometimes see other non-native speakers who do use more of the informal jargon though, sometimes without having fully understood it's meaning, so they use it wrong, and their sentences become both pitiful and incomprehensible. Its a good way to to make yourself look like a fool.

To Arnt's point, I have dyslexia and read differently than most. This spills over to my typing and proofreading. I don't always see words/letters in the proper order when I read casually. I basically use assumptions based on the letters present and the context to decide what it actually says. Unless I am reading carefully (for work or other such purpose) I frankly don't notice most of the common "wrong word" mistakes, as I am only going for meaning. This is not an excuse however; my English butchering in places like this is (to put it frankly) as Arnt points out laziness. I'd like to say it is bourn of familiarity, but honestly, I'm lazy. This is a good reminder that non-English speakers are here and my laziness adds confusion and proliferates errors. . .

When I read that someone’s guitar had sole, I too laughed. What a duffus!

But then I looked into some of his earlier posts and discovered the fellow did use fish glue exclusively for that build.

So I have to ask, wouldn’t his guitar in fact have sole? There you have it folks, a fish may indeed be a fish.

It depends. Sole is used in the manufacture of some fish glues, but it's use in lutherie can result in a "flat" sounding guitar.

I prefer fish glue made exclusively with the Pacific guitarfish (Rhinobatos planiceps).

Ah! Using Sole fish glue. That must be why my guitars always turn out Crappie.

Once this information is out the hide glue boys won’t have a cow leg to stand on.

Murray - I have thoroughly enjoyed the thread that you started. It has demonstrated to me once again that the creativity and wit of luthiers is not limited to wood, glue and bending irons, even though Americans as a group are not particularly good spellers. Anyway, thanks for starting this whole thing.

I like your reply, but couldn't resist the temptation to run the spell checker on it. I only accepted recommended changes, and if it caught a mispelling but didn't recommend anything, I left it alone, and here's what I got

It actually did better than i thought it might, but with the possilbe exception of Tony (no offense ), I think the human mind out preformed the computer spell checker.

In Tony's defense, it clearly stated 'the hmuan mnid.'

I’m afraid spell check is taking us a little further down the road first paved by pocket calculators.

Some of you may actually remember doing math with just a pencil and paper, but I guess you have to be pretty old to remember that.

And writing? Believe it or not we actually did it the same way! No fancy keyboards or monitors, and the only spell checker was the reader.

A few weeks ago I did some long division in the margins of some paperwork here at work. A few days later someone came across it and was making fun of whomever it was who did the calculations by hand. I had to chuckle and then admit that it was me.

I bet they would be really blown away to find out that handplanes are still in common use too.
