Well at least new to me! Has anyone seen/held/worked/experienced the new violin makers plane?

I have one of their model makers block planes, use it every day. Looks like another $100.00 out the door.

Is the sole flat or convex?

That looks really nice.

I've been considering getting an Ibex for brace shaping. This little LN looks a lot nicer but is a bit bigger.

Do those of you who shape braces with a plane think this new LN would work or is too big.

Thanks,
Kevin Looker

It should work fine, I use my model makers plane every time I'm in the shop. I have their full size block plane also, but I always end up with the model makers. I was tapering some walnut back bracing yesterday, width of the blade see through shavings........fun stuff.

If I were looking for a brace shaping plane, I'd order one of Stephen Boone's little hand made planes. I have a bunch of small planes, including a couple of finger planes, but none are nearly as good for brace shaving and shaping. Stephen's plane is just amazing, and has an outstanding blade that stays sharp a long time.

I was given the LN model maker's plane, from someone who thought it would be nice for planing the concave parts of mandolin plates. Its a lovely, well made tool, but unfortunately, I find the geometry of the sole far from optimal for this task; I would have preferred if it was "rounder" lengthwise, and "flatter" sideways, and not as long. I have several shop made wooden planes of various sizes that I use for this, the LN one just doesn't work as well. If this new plane has the same geometry, I'm not sure it will be a hit among violin makers, as violin plate archings aren't that different from mandos (that is, if their preference is anything like mine, I really have no idea about that...). Perhaps this plane isn't really aimed at the violin maker market?

BTW, as much as I like using planes, I don't use them for shaping braces on guitars; they always bump into other braces, and they don't work that well on those short spans. I do pretty much everything with a 3/4" paring chisel; faster, and better control.
