I have built a florentine cutaway before, but I didn't bind the point of the cutaway. I'd like to do that on a build, but I'm not sure what the best way (or perhaps different ways) to cut the binding channels. How do you accomplish this? What tools do you use? Seems like trying to use a laminate trimmer would be fraught with peril... Do you use one piece of binding or two? ...oh yeah, and what about the edge of the body near the neck...? Any comments (and of course photos) would be greatly appreciated.

I bind the tip of the cutaway and at the neck block before I glue the top or back on. I use a ruler and clamp it in place and just use a small japanese hand saw to cut to the ruler then chisel out to suit. I use 2 pieces of binding and side perfling. I don't have any pictures of the procedure sorry.

Never done one but I've always loved Jim Olsons detailed build threads & this one shows pics that might clarify things.

I haven't actually done one yet (disclaimer), but the best two resources I've seen on this so far are:
- John Mayes' cutaway DVD
- Somogyi's book (the "making" volume, not the more theoretical one)

I thought I would bump this back up to see if I could get more responses. I sent Robbie O'Brien an e-mail and he suggested using a pen blank for the ponit of the cutaway. Has anyone done this and would like to describe (or show) how it's done?

Hello Steve, I bound every edge, piece by piece, for the corners surley hand-tools. At the cutaway I use 2 pieces (unsharp on picture 6)

Just doing it step by step ....

Actually Dave that is Portuguese and was drawn by Brazilian luthier Antonio Tessarin. It was drawn for me years ago and I posted it here to help others. Look slike it has been recycled and is still helping.

If you want to know how I did this one let me Know It is pretty simple but there are some steps get it right. I have some photos.

I cut the rabbet by hand using a straight edge (backed with sandpaper so it stays put) and a razor saw. Then chisel.
