Has anyone ever used the Dust Bee Gone Mask that Woodcraft sells?

Although i thought it was a bit pricey I decided to get one since it's made in the USA and washable/reusable. I've been using it about a year now and it seems to work OK except when I'm doing heavy band saw or table saw work, or working with irritating woods such as walnut and cocobolo. I get mild irritation in my throat when using the mask in these conditions. I'm just curious if anyone else has used this mask and what their experience is with it.

Also I would appreciate any advice about respiratory safety. I'm thinking about getting a respirator but I'm not sure what to get.

I bought one and I thought it was crap. It provided no real filtration. It also fits very close to the face so it gets wet and irritates your face. Use a real air purifying respirator with replaceable cartridges. Many varieties our there and they are all good if you get one that fits your face well.

I have had one for a few year. It seems to work good and does not fog my glasses. For very heavy tasks I got with the 3M mask

This mask most probably does not fit snugly (how could it? - I believe it can't) and it is rated to filtering only down to 3 microns which is not enough for the finest wood dust we produce (we want good filtering down to the range of about 0.3 to 0.5). This is why you get that irritation. Don't get fooled by perceiving it as mild. That stuff builds up in our body and we run the risk to recognize a health problem when it is too late (talking of sensitizing, allergies and much worse diseases).


I guess you already have seen that these days there has been posted some inspiring advice here. I am currently using a product I'm not happy with. I'll get now a 3M 7500 series mask with the 2091 particulate (P100, which is HEPA standard) filters (for wood dust). For aerosols there is a variety of cartridges, depending on the type of aerosol. For combining the cartridges with the P100 filters one needs the 502 adapter piece (an inexpensive alternative cartridge cover).

I have been using one of these dust masks from Lee Valley http://www.leevalley.com/en/wood/page.aspx?p=62066&cat=1,42207,43647 much better filtration than the disposable masks and fits better. I can even put my glasses on after it is on my face.

Personally I use a Trend Airshield Pro. Lots of money upfront but I bought it when I was doing a lot of turning. I pop in the earplugs, done the Airshield and I'm good to go. Full face protection for power tools, respiratory protection and I'm comfortable.

Anyhow, it's a lot of money but it's very effective and convenient, especially if you wear glasses like me. Probably a little off topic, but I like plugging products that really work well for me.

I get to wear lots of face masks/ full face respirators and forced air PAPR, PPE at work. For stuff a lot worse than wood dust. Talk to a pro get the right piece of equipment. Nothing but a properly fitted (actually test your fit) face piece & supplied air is 100%.

I don't know yet how long a set of filters will last, I just ordered this equipment two days ago! (See my former message)

A dealer of those face masks has an instruction sheet online where they mention that you can use the dust filters until noticing increased breathing resistance. Of course this does not apply for aerosols/chemicals/radioactivity filter cartridges!

Very cheep, quite comfortable and if you're in and out of hospitals, you can probably find one for nothing.
