I found a hardwood place up here and surprisingly they had some really nice exotics for Alaska that were reasonably priced. After looking through a pile for some nice quartered wood I couldn't resist these boards. There is a decent amount of QS material where I will join them up. I just hope it doesn't cut once I get it milled.

I wanted to mill it today because my shop shipment was delivered this afternoon. However the movers broke dang near everything including my bandsaw, drum sander and table saw. SO now I gotta wait for my claim to process. I still feel better looking at this stuff. Smells wonderful. I just hope I don't run into any problems with it cupping.

Bolivian RW is amazingly stable for its density. The only warping problems I have had after resawing were due to poor drying practices.

This is my first experience with Bolivian Rosewood and I'll tell you what, I'm in love. I almost slept with the board last night. The pores are tiny, it should take a polish like glass and the price is definitely right!

Sleeping with that board is not a very good idea :) Pao Ferro (let's use the proper name rather than Bolivian "rosewood", it is not a rosewood) is reputed to be toxic, maybe even worse than cocobolo. Watch the dust when working it.

It sure smells good!I! I sure wish I'd fall in love with a wood that wasn't a sensitizer for once. Between this and my coco stash I'm going to have a rash for the next 10 years!

i´ve resawn a couple pau ferro/morado/santosRW/bolivianRW/caviuna boards (ouch, trade names can tire you... - off topic: for a brazilian (bolivianRW grows in Brazil :o ) pau ferro is more commonly the name for Caesalpinia ferrea and M. scheroxylon is known there as caviuna or "jacaranda pardo"; it seems the confusion never ends) and was quite afraid, but it went rather smoothly - but i haven´t used it yet and am a bit afraid of sanding it...bad rep for this wood.
nice looking wood,BTW!

I have several friends who react badly to Pau Ferro, ie, rashes from sawdust, can't touch the wood, etc. I am fortunate that it doesn't bother me at all, even when I forget to wear my mask when sanding or scrapping.

Unlike Cocobolo it is possible to build a tolerance to Pau Ferro if you have a bad reaction. I'm anticipating a bad reaction as I have sensitive skin. I'm gonna cut a lot of this stuff though so I should get used to it.

Mount Storm is a hardwood store here in Windsor, CA.
They have a bit of that stuff,
and I bought some.
I didn't build a git out of it,
but made a banjo stand out of it.
Beautiful under finish.
I can't remember if the dust was irritating.
Go for it, and let us know if it cups!

I just now went out o the "shop" (ha!, garage!)
and filed a piece of it,
and it didn't have much odor at all.
Slight barnyard smell though,
and it gave my nose a little zing,
but not much.
I sound like a freakin' wine taster!

This stuff smells like BRW, literally like roses. I had no plans to buy anything when I visited the store but I couldn't resist. Can't wait to close a box with that aroma. It's not as pungent as say a BRW head plate, but the smell is very similar just not as strong. They had a couple 15' boards of it and I'll buy the rest, especially if this aroma is not the norm. I was amazed that it wasn't a true Dalbergia. It smells the same. At the price I'm done with EIR, and this is the replacement. I'm torn between it and a massive stash of figured walnut. I'm going to have to thin some of my zoot stash I suppose.

The pau ferro I have has a "spicy" smell, different than BRW, but quite nice. I don't react badly to the wood, but I do try to minimize contact with the dust. I have built several instruments out of pau ferro, some of which was flat sawn, and it all behaved well - no unpleasant surprises. It is a dream to finish.

Nah the pores are way to small. Great stuff though.
